Operated by Health Care Service Corporation, Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois is committed to diversity
CHICAGO (Sept. 2, 2008) - Health Care Service Corporation (HCSC), which operates Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois (BCBSIL) was recently named the best place in the country to work for blacks in technology by National Black Data Processing Associates (BDPA) and WorkplaceDiversity.com.
Called the Epsilon Award, this annual recognition is given to companies that show a real commitment to diversity and to supporting African Americans in the workplace.
"Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois is committed to diversity at all levels," said Paul Boulis, president, BCBSIL. "Our extensive efforts include initiatives to recruit and retain diverse employees, fostering an organizational culture of respect and inclusiveness, a minority vendor recruitment program that has helped many local businesses, and our charitable giving, which funds hundreds of health and human services providers in a wide variety of diverse communities across the state."
HCSC, a Mutual Legal Reserve Company which operates Blue Cross and Blue Shield Plans in Illinois, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas, has initiatives to recruit and retain diverse employees and aims to maintain a work environment that is respectful and inclusive. The company also has a minority vendor recruitment program that helps local minority-owned businesses grow and prosper, and it funds hundreds of health and human services in diverse communities in all four states.
"In this economy, many African Americans in technology are concerned about opportunities for both employment and advancement," said National BDPA President, Denise Holland. "It is important to recognize exceptional companies, like HCSC, that have provided African Americans with challenging and fulfilling career opportunities in Information Technology."
To identify the Epsilon winner, BDPA supporters completed a comprehensive survey that rated performance in the areas of demographics, diversity programs, diversity (training, affinity groups), tenure, promotions and terminations, diversity recruiting, career path programs, minority vendor programs, and community outreach.
According to Will Bundy, former national BDPA outside director: "Our winners have demonstrated a commitment to people and an understanding that diversity has a bottom line business case value."
