Job Description

Job Summary: Reporting to the Associate Director of Digital Marketing, the Marketing Automation Manager will be a power user of Salesforce Marketing Cloud, leveraging the platform to nurture leads, support enrollment-focused campaigns, and engage HBS Online past participants and key clients. This role will focus on enhancing marketing automation and driving performance improvements through data-driven strategies. The successful candidate will have strong technical expertise in Salesforce Marketing Cloud, experience in lead nurturing, and a deep understanding of digital engagement strategies. A strong command of SQL for data management, segmentation, and campaign optimization within Salesforce Marketing Cloud is essential for success in this role.

Job-Specific Responsibilities:

  • Build trust and collaboration by being present on-site and engaging directly with colleagues and various constituents.

Marketing Automation & Campaign Execution:

  • Develop and execute marketing automation campaigns (i.e., email, SMS, WhatsApp), ensuring accuracy in content, audience segmentation, and deployment.
  • Utilize Salesforce Marketing Cloud to create personalized marketing automation campaigns, with working knowledge to create landing pages and web forms with cohesive design and tone, and collaborate with Marketing, Web, and IT for successful delivery and data analysis.
  • Develop and refine dynamic and scalable marketing automation campaign content with an emphasis on strong copywriting that meets conversion goals.
  • Develop and optimize campaign templates, workflows, and audience segmentation strategies to maximize lead engagement and conversion.
  • Use SQL within Salesforce Marketing Cloud to manage data extensions, create complex audience segments, and automate data processing.
  • Ensure compliance with data privacy regulations (e.g., CAN-SPAM, CASL, GDPR) in collaboration with IT and legal teams.​​​​

Technology & Platform Management:

  • Act as a subject matter expert in Salesforce Marketing Cloud, with a focus on SQL-based data structuring, segmentation, campaign execution, and performance reporting.
  • Partner with IT to manage and execute a Marketing Cloud technology roadmap, ensuring optimal use of platform capabilities, preparation for major releases, and efficient data syncing with Salesforce Sales Cloud.
  • Stay current with marketing automation trends and Salesforce Marketing Cloud updates to continuously improve processes and drive innovation.

Strategic Planning & Optimization:

  • Implement tracking and tagging and analyze and report on marketing campaign performance to make data-driven optimization recommendations.
  • Leverage data, market research, and frontline feedback to inform strategic shifts and design marketing experiments.
  • Identify opportunities for scalability of new campaigns or enhancements to existing strategies that align with revenue goals and improve the experience of prospective, current, or past program participants.
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders, including Marketing & Product teams, IT, and media agencies to refine and evolve lead acquisition strategies.
  • This role is responsible for other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent is required.
  • Minimum five (5) years of overall experience including 3 years supporting and implementing web and/or email marketing is required
  • Education beyond high school may count toward experience.
  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook) experience is a must.

Additional Qualifications and Skills:

  • Extensive experience with Salesforce Marketing Cloud (SFMC) and Salesforce CRM.
  • Excellent written communication and copywriting skills
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
  • Proficiency in SQL for querying, filtering, and managing large datasets within Salesforce Marketing Cloud, as well as automating segmentation and reporting processes.
  • Proficiency in HTML and email design best practices.
  • Command of HTML, CSS, and AmpScript and the latest standards, specifically for email
  • Experience with list segmentation, web analytics, and intermediate Excel Skills
  • Experience with debugging email rendering issues in many different email clients -- particularly the challenges inherent in coding an email for Outlook on desktop
  • A working knowledge of the following technologies and concepts: Adobe Photoshop, V-Lookup, Rich Text, CAN-SPAM, CASL, GDPR, Open Rates, Click Rates, CTOR/Effective Rates, soft bounce, hard bounce, deliverability, domain, ISP, URL, alt-tag, etc.
  • Pitches in where needed - “no job is too big or small”

  • This is a hybrid position which we consider to be a combination of remote and onsite work at our Boston, MA based campus. HBS Online Staff are expected to be onsite a minimum of 2 days per week and departments provide onsite coverage Monday – Friday. Specific hours and days onsite will be determined by business needs and are subject to change with appropriate advanced notice.

Work Format Details

This is a position that is based at a Harvard campus location with some remote work options available. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
