Principal Software Engineer
The Role
Fidelity Investments Workplace Investing (WI) organization is seeking an experienced mainframe Software Engineer to join our Development team within Stock Plan Services (SPS) Technology tasked with making quality improvements to our equity compensation application. The selected candidate will provide technical leadership on a globally distributed team using a Mainframe technology stack. This role demands significant collaboration with members of various business and IT groups throughout the lifecycle of a typical problem or request.
The Expertise We’re Looking For
- Bachelor’s degree (or foreign education equivalent) in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, Mathematics, Physics, or a closely related field and ten or more (10+) years of experience in the job offered or ten or more (10+) years of experience as a technical lead in mainframe brokerage or stock plan services systems and application development.
- Or, alternatively, Master’s degree (or foreign education equivalent) in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, Information Systems, Mathematics, Physics, or a closely related field and six (6) years of experience in the job offered or six (6) years of experience as a technical lead in mainframe brokerage and stock plan services systems and application development.
- While not required, knowledge of ETL, Informatica, Java, Python, or other distributed languages is a plus
The Purpose of Your Role
Use business and technical knowledge to translate the vision for divisional initiatives into business solutions by developing complex stock plan services software applications on a mainframe platform running under a Z/OS environment.

- Your demonstrated expertise in mainframe application development, automation, and support, utilizing COBOL, CICS, DB2, JCL, VSAM, MQ-Series, and SQL
- Your demonstrated expertise in mainframe performance tuning and capacity planning, including ways to reduce I/Os, CPU Time, MSUs, and MIPs, using Strobe, iStrobe, and Platinum Detector
- Your demonstrated expertise in mainframe application development including: file format and comparison using File-AID; version management using Endeavor; debugging and unit testing using Intertest and Abend-AID; and job scheduling using Control-M
The Value You Deliver
- Performing as a full stack engineer within an Agile team, including requirements gathering, development, and end-to-end testing
- Defining, developing, and leading interactive team to implement application level architecture, giving due consideration to application scalability and extensibility, and conformance to established standards
- Providing on-site and on-call support as needed and acting as a subject matter expert as part of a cross-functional crisis management team
- Developing applications on complex projects, components, and subsystems for the division
- Recommending development testing tools and methodologies and reviewing and validating test plans
- Resolving technical roadblocks involving multiple technologies and making recommendations and improvements to avoid them in the future
- Collaborating with multiple layers of management to share approaches, develop solutions, and improve capabilities throughout the organization
- Leading collaborative sessions and ceremonies with stakeholders and providing guidance and feedback to team members
- Being responsible for QA readiness of software deliverables
- Planning and conducting system testing
- Developing comprehensive documentation for multiple applications or subsystems
- Establishing full project life cycle plans for complex projects across multiple platforms
- Being responsible for meeting project goals on-time and on-budget
- Advising on risk assessment and risk management strategies for projects
- Planning and coordinating project schedules and assignments for multiple projects
- Acting as a primary liaison for business units to resolve various project/technology issues
- Providing technology solutions to daily issues and technical evaluation estimates on technology initiatives
- Performing independent and complex technical and functional analysis for multiple projects supporting several initiatives
- Developing original and creative technical solutions to on-going development efforts
The Team
Stock Plan Services administers equity compensation programs on behalf of public and private companies offering various compensations programs such as: Employee Stock Purchase Plans, Restricted Stock Awards/Units, Stock Option Plans, Stock Appreciation Rights and Performance based Awards. Currently SPS services over 1.6M participants employed by over 300 clients and spread out in 150 countries. The business is looking to further expand in the international equity compensation market, focused initially on western European countries and companies based there. As part of this business initiative, we are extending our capabilities to enable a truly global platform.
The base salary range for this position is $85,000-$179,000 per year.Placement in the range will vary based on job responsibilities and scope, geographic location, candidate’s relevant experience, and other factors.
Base salary is only part of the total compensation package. Depending on the position and eligibility requirements, the offer package may also include bonus or other variable compensation.
