Job Summary

The Nursing Department Laboratories Supervisor promotes, coordinates, and assists student learning in the Nursing Department’s skills labs. The supervisor assures the effective and efficient operation of the laboratories in meeting student and program needs in collaboration with the Nursing Department faculty and staff. The supervisor oversees operations of RN, PN and CNA laboratories ensuring compliance with OSHA standards and safety rules. Additional responsibilities include supervision of the Laboratory Coordinators. Key responsibilities include: 1) supervise lab coordinators across all locations 2) Oversee procurement of supplies, inventory and budget management 3) Maintain and safeguard High-value lab equipment 4) Monitor and enforce safety standards and regulations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Operational Leadership

  • Supervises use of laboratories by courses in the Nursing Department. Oversees daily workflow, inclusive of creating standard operational procedures to be approved by department leadership and provides training/guidance for new faculty related to lab operations. Supervises assigned staff in performance of job duties and responsibilities. Assigns and delegates tasks, provides direction, resolves work problems, communicates job expectations, trains employees, and develops professional growth development opportunities. Participates in the interviewing and hiring of laboratory staff along with the Chairperson.
  • Oversees scheduling of lab coordinators to assure coverage of ADN, PN and CNA labs for accurate set up, restocking and maintenance during lab and effective time disassembly of completed lab. Participates in the interviewing and hiring of laboratory staff along with the Chairperson.
  • Supervises and assures appropriate standards of lab cleanliness and assists with finding resources for equipment maintenance and repairs. Coordinates open lab opportunities for students. Ensures all high value assets are maintained to promote longevity use in high volume labs.
  • Coordinates with ADN, PN , and CNA Faculty, and staff regarding safe, efficient and effective operations of the Nursing Department Laboratories.
  • Manages orientation of new Nursing Program faculty related to lab policy, procedures, and equipment.
  • Participates in course, faculty, and staff meetings as appropriate. Creates and maintains a respectful, professional working environment incorporating integrative learning, reflective thinking, and safety.

Lab Management

  • Collaborates with Nursing Program course leaders in the utilization of evidence-based practices to integrate best practices in lab instruction. Collaborates with Nursing Program faculty to plan teaching strategies that will increase the student’s ability to meet the skill requirements. Collaborates and assists Nursing Program faculty in designing learning contracts and learning experiences to remediate students with identified skill deficits.
  • Collaborates with Nursing department faculty, lab coordinators and Chairperson to determine best utilization of lab space for student learning. Oversees the inventory, ordering and utilization of all lab supplies and equipment. Collaborates with nursing department faculty, and lab coordinators to determine ordering needs and review of newly requested equipment.

Continuous Improvement

  • Manages budget for Nursing Program Laboratories and provides lab fee analysis for Nursing Program courses when indicated, in conjunction with the Program Coordinator, Nursing, and Chairperson. Collaborates with the Lab Coordinator, Nursing Certificate Coordinator of the Patient Simulation Laboratories, lab staff, faculty, and Chairperson to integrate learning with maximum cost efficiency for students.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies, equipment, and learning resources for Nursing Program Laboratories. Maintains professional standards reflective of the Ohio Board of Nursing rules and ACEN Standards and Criteria. Maintains Nursing Program laboratory records and inventories of activities, equipment, and supplies in the laboratories.

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a Health Care Field (RN, Respiratory therapist, Paramedic)
  • Two (2) years of employment in acute patient care as a health care provider.
  • State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or demonstrable ability to gain access to work site(s).
  • Current, valid license/certificate related to the health care field.
  • Current healthcare provider CPR certification.
  • *An appropriate combination of education, training, coursework, and experience may qualify a candidate.
