Squaw Rock Maintenance Facility

<br><h4>Introduction</h4><br><ul><li>The Long Island Sound Study is a bistate and stakeholder partnership dedicated to protecting and restoring the sound. While there has been significant progress in the restoration and protection of the resources of Long Island Sound, the partnership is taking a hard look at equity in the decision-making processes. Each of these decisions in investments, implementation and protection are derived from a variety of data sources. As a partner of the Long Island Sound Study DEEP is seeking to build connections with communities and improve access to these decisions and the data that feeds these decisions. DEEP is seeking bi/multi-lingual staff to build capacity, communications and create meaningful connections and access to the Long Island Sound resources.</li><li>One of the specific data points that DEEP seeks to support through this program is the annual survey of the public who fish along CT’s coastline with DEEP’s Marine Fisheries Program (MFP). The survey includes questions such as quantities of kept and released fish, their associated length/weight measurements and other information about that fishing trip. The survey is voluntary and requires good communication with potential responders. The survey data is used to determine recreational harvest of marine fish species, which is critical for stock assessment purposes and ultimately for managing the marine fishery for the public.</li><li>The survey is provided in English, and the MFP is extending the program to include language support for non-English speakers. This language support is intended to create more equitable representation in the angler survey and thereby enable more equitable representation in the management decisions that are based on this data and build a genuine connection with non-English speaking angler communities of Connecticut. The language support team will be provided the same training as survey technicians and provided all the necessary identifying clothing and materials to perform the job duties. The language support staff should be able to effectively engage with the public but are not required to have previous experience related to angler surveys.</li></ul><strong>Location</strong><br><ul><li>Employees would be expected to drive to Old Lyme each workday whether for office work or field work. Field work ranges from Greenwich, CT to Stonington, CT. Once trained, SRAs may also work independently by themselves. A major objective of the Diadromous Fisheries Program is to monitor selected sites across the state for diadromous fish species. Typically, these sites are at one of many “fishways” distributed around the state; fishways are structures that enable migratory fish species to swim above a dam to get to essential habitat located upstream of the dam. Some of these fishways are equipped with monitoring equipment that allows for the counting of fish passing through the fishway. SRAs will be trained to record and download data at these sites, as well as troubleshoot monitoring equipment. SRAs will also inspect fishways and clear them of debris as necessary to ensure adequate water flows down the fishway.<br><br>In addition, SRAs will also assist in transplantation of diadromous fish. Fish are trapped at “donor” streams with strong populations, loaded into transport trucks, and taken to other streams where they are released. The fish transplanted to “recipient” streams will reproduce and help restore the population of diadromous fish in that stream. To effectively participate in this important program activity, SRAs must be able to run short distances with a net full of fish weighing up to 50 pounds.<br><br>SRAs will be trained in various methods to collect diadromous fish. Collection methods could include trapping, netting (gill, seine, or hoop nets), and electrofishing. All of these collection methods require an SRA to have the ability to wade in chest-deep, flowing water over rocky, uneven stream bottoms. SRAs will also be trained in species identification of collected fish, and collection of biological samples such as scale samples that can be used to determine the age of fish.<br><br>SRAs will also be trained to perform data entry, basic data analysis, and general facility maintenance. Examples of data entry and analysis activities include reviewing videos recorded at fishway monitoring sites to count number of fish passing through the facility and entering data into Microsoft Excel spreadsheets. Positions are also available for those with additional levels of training and experience. These positions involve the use of machinery and power equipment such as lawn mowers, chain saws, brush cutters, tractors, medium duty vehicles and the use of skills in carpentry, plumbing, mechanical repairs, grounds maintenance. Must be at least 18 years old.<br><br>CREW LEADER<br><br>Supervises and works with an assigned crew of Seasonal Maintainers in activities involving the operation and maintenance of DEEP programs and facilities. May assist in job planning and in preparation of materials lists; may operate machinery and power equipment such as lawn mowers, chain saws, brush cutters, tractors, medium duty vehicles, and power tools; may perform routine preventative maintenance on equipment; may drive vehicles rated at 3/4 Ton Gross Vehicle Weight or less. Must be at least 18 years old.<br><br>PARK MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR<br><br>Assists in the maintenance of a recreational facility under the supervision of a Park and Recreation Supervisor and an EP Maintainer 3. Trains, supervises and schedules Seasonal Maintainers; evaluates work performance; assists in job planning and scheduling and in preparation of materials lists; operates machinery and power equipment such as lawn mowers, chain saws, brush cutters, tractors, medium duty vehicles, and power tools; performs routine preventative maintenance on equipment; may perform highly-skilled work in carpentry, plumbing, mechanical repairs or other skilled trade; may drive vehicles rated at 3/4 Ton Gross Vehicle Weight or less. Must be at least 18 years old.<br><br>CAMPGROUND OFFICE STAFF<br><br>Provides general camp office support services; registers campers; checks in reservations; collects camping fees; directs visitors; provides directions; and answers questions about the campground, State camping rules and regulations, campground activities, and the local area.<br><br>CAMPGROUND SUPERVISOR<br><br>Assists in managing the total operation of a State-owned campground under the supervision of a Park and Recreation Supervisor; acts as primary visitor contact, interacting with the public to assist them in the safe and orderly enjoyment of the Park.&nbsp; Resolves complaints and other issues or refers them to the proper authority; oversees opening and closing procedures; trains, supervises and schedules camp office staff; evaluates work performance; registers campers; checks in reservations; collects camping fees; directs visitors; provides directions; answers questions about the campground, State camping rules and regulations, campground activities, and the local area. Must be at least 18 years old.&nbsp;<br><br>PARK RANGER<br><br>Acts as primary visitor contact, interacting with the public to assist them in the safe and orderly enjoyment of the Park.
