About the Role
Alfred State is seeking a student-centered and collaborative Academic Advisement Assistant/Academic Advisor to join the Academic Advising Center. This role is integral to promoting student success by providing completion-driven, holistic advising that supports students from onboarding through degree attainment.
The Academic Advisement Assistant/Academic Advisor will work closely with students, faculty, and campus partners to guide academic planning, connect students with resources, and enhance the overall student experience. As part of a dynamic advising team, this position contributes to the coordination of advising services and supports initiatives that promote retention, engagement, and timely degree completion.
Depending on experience, interest, and institutional need, the advisor may support targeted student populations such as transfer, undeclared, at-risk, or degree completion students. This is a 12-month position that may require occasional evening and weekend hours.
The Successful Candidate Will:
- Provide comprehensive academic advising to a diverse student population through individual, group, and walk-in interactions, guiding course selection, degree planning, and career exploration.
- Support new and transfer students with onboarding, orientation, and structured academic planning, ensuring accurate understanding of degree requirements and timely progression.
- Serve as a key student resource by connecting individuals to campus services, maintaining accurate advising records, and supporting student success initiatives and events.
- Collaborate with faculty, departments, and Career Development to address advising needs, resolve transfer and academic issues, and facilitate transition to faculty advising.
- Teach and/or support college success, career exploration, and financial literacy programming, including courses, workshops, and faculty development efforts.
- Utilize advising technologies (e.g., Banner, DegreeWorks, Starfish, D2L) and maintain knowledge of academic policies to ensure accurate guidance and compliance.
- Contribute to assessment, data analysis, and continuous improvement efforts, while engaging in professional development, committees, and special projects.
Job Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in counseling, student services, education, or a related field
- Experience in academic advising, student success coaching, mentoring, counseling, or a related student support role
- Demonstrated knowledge of higher education practices, student success strategies, and the role of academic advising in student learning and development
- Ability to effectively communicate and build relationships with a diverse population of students, faculty, staff, and visitors
- Experience supporting diverse and/or at-risk student populations
- Strong organizational, communication, and technology skills, including the ability to manage multiple systems and maintain accurate records
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including occasional evenings and weekends
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in counseling, student services, higher education, or a related field
- Experience in academic advising within a higher education setting
- Teaching or training experience, including college success, career exploration, or related topics
- Experience supporting academically at-risk students and interpreting academic policies, requirements, and degree pathways
- Experience collaborating with academic departments and campus partners (e.g., career services, counseling, financial aid, admissions) to support student success
- Familiarity with student information and advising systems (e.g., Banner, DegreeWorks, Starfish, D2L, Excel)
- Experience contributing to faculty development, student programming, or professional development initiatives
- Ongoing professional development related to student learning, advising practices, or higher education trends
