The Public Works & Sustainability Department is seeking an innovative, motivated, team-oriented, and customer-focused professional to join as an Assistant Engineer in the Traffic Management Center (TMC) and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) groups within the City's Transportation division. The Irvine TMC and ITS groups maintain safe and efficient mobility for all road users, both in day-to-day operations and in special events.This recruitment will supplement an existing Eligibility List for the Assistant Engineer position, which will expire on 12/3/2025. Your Impact- Utilize clear communication and customer service skills working in a Traffic Management Center environment.
- Assist the TMC staff in monitoring and analyzing traffic conditions.
- Develop and recommend traffic signal timing plans to synchronize the City's traffic signal system.
- Assist the ITS staff in the design and maintenance of the City's fiber network; as well as the discovery and implementation of the latest technology in the traffic and transportation field.
- Provide technical assistance to other agencies or departments.
- Perform basic review of plans and specifications for such projects as construction, transportation, rehabilitation, traffic, landscape, drainage, building and plans, and maintenance. Prepares materials and cost estimates. Prepares related detailed reports and updates for on-going projects.
- Perform engineering calculations and applies engineering analysis in order to research and write detailed technical draft correspondence, memos and reports.
- Maintain knowledge of, and applies, codes, ordinances, resolutions, staff reports, construction drawings and specifications regarding specific projects.
- Investigate problems and submits alternative solutions and recommendations.

- Bachelor's degree in Engineering; some engineering experience preferred, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
- Requires a valid California driver's license.
- Demonstrate success in team collaboration, situational awareness, and sound judgement in both office and field settings.
- Experience in providing outstanding customer service with a positive attitude.
- Ability to perform traffic studies to improve the traffic network.
- Knowledge of traffic and transportation engineering, as well as traffic signal operations and traffic flow management.
- Knowledge of fiber optic communications, as well as design and implementation of ITS elements.
- Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills, as well as the ability to simultaneously manage multiple projects, track details, and work well under pressure.
