Valid Kentucky’s Driver’s License required. EPA Section 608 Technician Certification and EPA Section 609 Program Certification required within 6 months of hire.
Physical Requirements
Lifting, pushing, and/or pulling objects up to and over 50lbs; Standing or walking with objects up to 25lbs; Confined/cramped spaces; Loud noises; Hazardous situations, conditions, equipment, chemicals, fumes, including contaminants.
May work at various locations on the University Campus, and be exposed to elements of weather and temperature extremes while on-the-job; however, work is generally performed in indoor garage conditions.
Performs physical activities that require considerable use of arms, legs, hands, and movement of the whole body, such as required in working in and underneath vehicles with inadequate lighting, in awkward and cramped positions.
Shift
7:30am- 4:15pm (Monday – Friday) Hours of work may vary dependent upon situational factors, including weather-related emergencies, requiring night(s), weekend(s), and holiday(s) response.
Job Summary
Reporting to the Garage Superintendent, the Automotive Service Technician:
- Inspects, diagnoses, maintains, and repairs vehicles, including cars, trucks, heavy equipment, etc.
- Examines each vehicle to determine by elimination simple things that could be causing problems
- Performs test drives
- Responds to service calls with appropriate tools required to complete the expected repair (i.e.) jack/air tank for a flat tire, etc.
- Utilizes a variety of testing equipment, including diagnostic computers, electronics, rules of engineering, and compression gauges
- Examines belts, hoses, plugs, brakes, and fuel systems
- Tunes engines to use less fuel
- Inspects mechanical and electronic components
- Lubricates engines and parts
- Installs or repairs accessories, including heaters and windshield wipers
- Identifies parts needed and replaces or rebuilds damaged parts
- Makes adjustments or repairs, as needed
- Services air-conditioning systems, including attaching and detaching hoses and gauges, measures pressure, and adds or removes refrigerant
- Identifies damage to the body of the vehicle and recommends appropriate repair strategies (i.e.) body work, paint, etc.
- Suggests vendor providers
- Performs preventative maintenance on vehicles, such as oil changes, flushing, and replacing fluids, replacing brakes and brake pads, wheel bearings, sensors, and other parts
- Averts issues that may affect the performance and longevity of each vehicle
In addition, this position:
- Models and promotes excellent customer service for internal and external customers
- Communicates with customers and clients to review vehicle performance history, appearance, potential problems, and services they would like to receive
- Estimates costs, generates timelines for repairs, and secures approvals before performing any work
- Executes priorities in order to improve response time and reliability
- Ensures completion of work adheres to established practices, highest quality standards, and overall acceptability of work
- Demonstrates awareness that errors could cause serious injury to self and others
- Delivers a Safety-First Commitment in performance
Skills / Knowledge / Abilities
MS Windows/Office; SAP; KRONOS
Demonstrated experience in inspecting, diagnosing, maintaining, and repairing vehicles as well as interacting frequently with customers and a team of technicians and mechanics.
Knowledge and use of electronic and special diagnostic testing equipment; Ability to be physically active (standing, bending, stretching, twisting, or reaching out) for long periods and making fast, repeated movements of arms, legs, fingers, hands, and wrists to ensure quick, precise adjustments to machine controls.
