Position Description

The Battalion Chief is a key leadership role within the Tolleson Fire Department, responsible for overseeing and managing the operations of assigned fire stations and personnel during assigned shifts. The position ensures effective response to fire, medical, and other emergencies while supervising and mentoring fire department staff. The Battalion Chief is also tasked with implementing department policies, maintaining operational readiness, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications: Bachelor's Degree and five (5) years of progressively responsible experience related to the area of assignment, of which two (2) years must include supervisory or lead experience; or an equivalent combination of directly related education and experience. Candidates must demonstrate strong leadership skills through effective team management, decision-making under pressure, and foster a culture of collaboration and accountability. All candidates must have current certifications as a Firefighter II, EMT or Paramedic, and National Incident Management System (NIMS) certification for levels 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, and 800 are preferred. Valid Arizona Driver's License is required.

Preferred Qualifications / Selection Criteria: A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution is required to be considered for further advancement in the selection process.

Special Working Conditions

The Battalion Chief will operate in both an office environment and at emergency scenes. The role requires the ability to respond to emergencies at any time and may involve exposure to hazardous conditions, physically demanding tasks, and high-stress situations. Must be capable of performing the physical duties associated with firefighting and emergency response, including wearing personal protective equipment, operating firefighting apparatus, and conducting rescues under challenging conditions.

Physical Demands

Positions in this class typically require stooping, kneeling, crouching, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Sedentary: Exerting up to 10 lbs. occasionally or negligible weights frequently; sitting most of the time.

Working Conditions are in an office setting. Depending on assignment, some travel may be required.
