Overview
¿Habla español? ¿Le gusta ayudar a su comunidad?
If you answered yes to both these questions, we need you. Providing outstanding customer service to patrons in our community is at the heart of what we do at Multnomah County Library. Whether we are helping a patron locate an item, making sure our items are shelved correctly, or assisting with library account questions, it's our employees and their dedication to customer service who make a visit to the library an enjoyable one.
If you're a customer service superstar who enjoys helping people, especially those in the Latinx community, then we invite you to help us provide our patrons with an outstanding experience. Consider becoming a Bilingual Spanish Library Access Services Assistant!
As a Bilingual Spanish Library Access Services Assistant, you will provide customer service to both patrons and staff with a specific focus on assisting those who speak Spanish. Your primary duty will be material movement, but you will also assist with circulation, account management, and other duties that support library operations.
Some of your duties may include:
- Checking in book drop and properly shelving materials in library stacks.
- Process branch returns using Automated Materials Handling or SmartShelf depending on location.
- Providing account management assistance, including clearly explaining policies and procedures to patrons.
- Assisting patrons with using library services, including answering access services, information, and directional questions.
- Maintaining, troubleshooting, and teaching internal and external customers how to use equipment such as computers, copiers, check-out stations, credit card payment machines and cash registers.
- Preparing meeting rooms or other designated areas for programs.
- Helping with opening and/or closing a library location, ensuring the location is organized and safe for operations.
- Bridging the gaps due to cultural differences with the Spanish speaking community in the library.
- Other duties as assigned.
This is a physically demanding position. You will frequently lift and move items such as crates and stacks of books. You may also set up tables, chairs, computer and audiovisual equipment for programs and meetings. You must be able to work in a standing position for extended periods, kneel, reach, bend, and constantly grasp and lift materials from one to 15 pounds (and frequently lift 35 to 50 pounds).
The library is open and welcoming to all members of our community, including individuals who may be encountering hardships or challenges that affect their behavior and interactions. This position requires someone with the ability to work respectfully and capably with people from all backgrounds and age groups. You must demonstrate a positive attitude, excellent interpersonal skills, cultural sensitivity and a sense of humor while working with customers, co-workers and community. In providing customer service, you may encounter situations that require de-escalation or assistance from a supervisor or person-in-charge. Your ability to exercise quick and mature judgment in dealing with potentially disruptive, physically dangerous or abusive customers and emergencies is crucial.
