Job DescriptionChronicle Heritage is currently seeking an Associate Archaeologist (Crew Chief/Field Director) to serve as an on-call Field Director based out of our Tallahassee office to support a large-scale Phase III mitigation project in northern Florida. This role includes advanced technical responsibilities, independent report production, and increasing involvement in project management and regulatory interpretation. Hire Type: Part-time (hourly)Schedule: Monday-Friday, standard business hours; occasional weekend work depending on projects Location: Tallahassee, FL The Associate Archaeologist will:

• Lead large-scale and complex archaeological projects, often supervising multiple Crew Chiefs and field teams
• Serve as Field Director, depending on project needs
• Independently plan and execute field strategies, including survey, testing, and data recovery
• Apply advanced knowledge of survey methodologies, site identification, and site recording
• Evaluate site significance and applicability as a historic property under relevant regulations
• Interpret and apply federal, state, and local cultural resource regulations
• Provide guidance and mentorship to junior staff
• Act as a Safety Steward, ensuring compliance with safety protocols

Required Qualifications

• Demonstrated experience leading complex archaeological fieldwork and supervising teams
• Strong understanding of cultural resource regulations and compliance requirements
• Valid driver's license

Preferred Skills and Experience

• Graduate degree in archaeology, anthropology, or a closely related field
• Meets Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualification Standards (36 CFR Part 61)
• Registered Professional Archaeologist (RPA)
• Familiarity with regional cultural history and regulatory frameworks
• Proficiency with mapping and field technologies
• Direct contribution to project strategy and client deliverables

Physical and Mental Requirements and Work Environment

• Regular fieldwork or on-site inspections are required, which necessitates ability to frequently travel/drive a vehicle (sight, hearing, and manual manipulation of driving mechanisms), cognitive ability to plan travel, use maps or GPS navigation systems.
• May require ambulation and movement to enable walking or hiking 10+ miles per day on rough and/or hazardous terrain and occasional climbing, crouching, kneeling, balancing on rough terrain. Fieldwork may involve exposure to conditions of rain, sun, heat, wind, dust, etc., with exposure to animals, plants, wet conditions, biting insects, poison oak, etc. May require use of respiratory equipment.
• Some fieldwork may require carrying loads up to 25 pounds or work around heavy construction equipment.
• Vision is required to observe environmental phenomena and record and translate observations into text (either keyboard entry on a computer or dictation and audio translation of recording to Standard English scientific text).
• Mental requirements include ability to organize one's own work or that of crew members; ability to recognize and observe scientific data and analyze data as well as ability to perform calculations. Must also be able to observe social and professional interactions and respond appropriately.
