Job Summary
The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) performs both clinical and administrative duties in a fast-paced healthcare setting to support the delivery of high-quality patient care. Responsibilities include assisting with patient preparation, vital signs, data collection, medication administration, and front-office tasks including scheduling and patient communications.
Essential Functions
- Greets and prepares patients for examination and procedures
- Takes and documents vital signs, medical history, and other pertinent data
- Assists physicians with exams, procedures, and treatments
- Administers injections, performs waived lab tests, and collects specimens
- Documents all clinical care and updates patient records accurately and timely
- Performs front desk duties including scheduling, registration, answering phones, and handling prescription requests
- Calls in prescriptions, obtains prior authorizations, and facilitates communication between patient and provider
- Ensures cleanliness, stocking, and organization of exam rooms, labs, and supplies
- Provides patient education under physician direction
- Maintains logs, performs sterilization of instruments, and ensures equipment is functioning properly
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations
- Knowledge of basic medical terminology, anatomy, and infection control
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Excellent organizational and time management skills
- Customer service orientation and ability to work in a team-based environment
- Proficiency with EMR systems and general office equipment
- Ability to lift patients, push/pull equipment, and stand or walk for extended periods
- Maintains patient confidentiality and adheres to HIPAA regulations
Qualifications
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program required
Licenses/Certification
- Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Registered Medical Assistant (RMA), or equivalent through AAMA, AMT, NHA, NAHP, or AAH required
- Basic Life Support (BLS) required
Experience
- Minimum of six (6) months of Medical Assistant experience in a clinical setting preferred
- Two (2) years of physician office or hospital-based experience preferred
- Familiarity with specialty practice protocols preferred
