Oregon State Hospital, a Joint Commission and CMS certified public psychiatric hospital, provides psychiatric hospital services and patient treatment services to persons committed by the Oregon courts as part of the state mental health system. The Oregon State Hospital Salem Campus is a 610-bed facility supported by approximately 2,000 staff.
Our Spiritual Care and EducationProgram provides interfaith/interreligious spiritual care services through direct service by Interfaith Chaplains and Interfaith CPE students to OSH clients and staff, supervising partnerships with a diverse set of spiritual/religious groups and community-based organizations, and volunteers. Spiritual Care manages staff-led and volunteer-based spiritual/religious activities at all OSH campuses.
The purpose of this Chaplain position is to provide spiritual/pastoral/religious care to all clients at OSH. Interfaith chaplains provide or collaborate in providing a variety of religious/spiritual events and gatherings, including but not limited to treatment mall groups, worship services, ceremonies for interfaith/interreligous and religion-specific practice, memorial services, and rituals and sacraments of various types. The Spiritual Care Department also includes leading or supporting clients' personal spiritual/religious ceremonies; individual and small-group pastoral care/support; spiritual/religious education; screening, support, and oversight of spiritual/religious volunteers and visitors; provision of religious/spiritual resources; and participating in OSH committees, such as the OSH Ethics Committee.
- Support and assist client/resident religious and spiritual growth and practice by coordinating diverse client-centered religious/spiritual rituals, ceremonies, gatherings, and practices (e.g., meditation groups, sacramental ministry, weddings, memorial services).
- Provide individual spiritual care/counsel to assist and support client-centered exploration, practice, and growth within the client’s/resident’s chosen spiritual and/or religious path(s) and interests.
- Develop, implement, lead/co-lead, and support a variety of client-centered focused, applied, and supportive Treatment Mall groups within the Interfaith Chaplain’s scope of practice to support and foster client/resident success in relation to their treatment goals, recovery, and general wellbeing.
- Collaborate with Spiritual Care and interdisciplinary colleagues to expand personal and collective understanding and use of evidence-based and best practices to support client-focused healthy attitudes, values, beliefs, skills, practices, and relationships during and after client residency at OSH.
- Enhance teamwork within the Spiritual Care Department and with Treatment Services and interdisciplinary colleagues to support collaborative activities, efforts, projects, and initiatives developed by OSH and OHA leadership to support the mission, vision, and values of the organization.
- Assist in recruiting, training, supervising, evaluating, and recognizing religious/spiritual volunteers, in collaboration with the Spiritual Care Department, Director and Volunteer Services, to help clients discover, develop, deepen, practice, and express their religious interests and spirituality through client-centered services.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree;
- possess current official endorsement/sponsorship from a recognized religious organization (e.g., an ordained religious leader)
- three years of full‑time experience as a religious leader (such as: minister, priest, teacher, rabbi, or imam) in a formal setting (such as a parish, synagogue, tribe, temple, or mosque)
Special Requirement:
- A graduate degree (M.Div. or equivalent) from a CHEA accredited seminary or theological school
**Preference will be given to candidates who have previous clinical experience.
Desired Attributes:
We're seeking compassionate, reflective, and open-minded religious/spiritual leaders. You must have previous pastoral care/spiritual care experience and/or comparable experience that demonstrates your ability to:
- Meet the general requirements for certification with APC/BCCI, the National Association of Catholic Chaplains, or one of their organizational partners and to attain board certification by one of those organizations within one year of hire.
- Compassionately and empathically visit clients and their visitors/families (with client consent) throughout the hospital to lend spiritual and religious support as needed.
- Conduct spiritual assessments and consult with staff concerning patients’ beliefs, practices, customs, or cultures that affect recovery.
- Provide care that is sensitive to and both supportive and respectful of all aspects of a patients’ and coworkers’ identity, including race, culture, gender identity, religion/spirituality, sexual orientation, immigration status, ability/(dis)ability, socioeconomic status, etc. in congruence with OSH values, mission, policies, and procedures.
- Articulate and advocate for the spiritual needs of patients to their care team and other chaplains/spiritual caregivers.
- Assist in providing memorial services and other religious/spiritual practices and special events, both to individual faith groups and interfaith groups.
- Work with other clinicians, staff, community clergy, and staff chaplains.
- Engage in the Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) program with openness to feedback, personal reflexivity, and commitment to skill development and professional formation.
- Demonstrate sensitivity to diverse religious, spiritual, and cultural practices and values and be able to advocate for the client’s rights and dignity, always honoring their religious, spiritual, and cultural perspective and practices.
Special Requirements: To be hired, you must have a criminal records check, and drug screen that meets OHA/OSH criteria at the time of hire, and throughout employment.
