General Statement: The Compensation Specialist is a dynamic professional who supports payroll compensation functions related to the review and verification of employees' compensation and employment data while also supporting human resources through the development, analysis, and administration of the College's compensation programs to ensure internal equity, external competitiveness, and compliance with applicable federal and state laws, collective bargaining agreements, and institutional policies.

This position is a unique opportunity which allows for support in both the payroll and human resources functions of the HR Division. The individual will prepare reports using employment and compensation data; enter and maintain employment and compensation data into the Commonwealth of Massachusetts HRCMS payroll system and other HRIS systems; regularly reconcile this data to ensure accuracy and consistency in both HRIS systems; and provide exceptional customer service when responding to inquiries about employment, compensation and deductions, contributions, employment verifications, and other data requests in a timely manner.

This position will also conduct market analyses, job evaluations, classification reviews, and salary studies to support strategic workforce planning and equitable compensation practices. This position will have the opportunity to learn and apply various salary structures and compensation plans for different unions at the College and non-unit personnel. The role requires strong analytical expertise, discretion in handling confidential information, and the ability to translate complex compensation data into clear, actionable guidance for administrators and senior leadership.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Payroll Function:

  • Assists with position, compensation, and integration of employee life cycle processes while ensuring confidentiality and compliance with appropriate collective bargaining agreements, policies, laws, and regulations.
  • Intake, verify and enter assigned employee groups payroll data into the HRCMS payroll system to ensure that employees are paid accurately and correctly.
  • Follow up with supervisors and employees regarding verification or clarification about assignments and timesheets.
  • Document the part-time hiring activity in a designated database.
  • Identify and locate part-time employee payroll information by utilizing MS Access to run queries in the Commonwealth of MA Information Warehouse.
  • Review and update Labor Cost Distribution information for employees in the state MOSAIC system.
  • Perform hourly timesheet calculations and enter data as assigned.
  • Research and respond to employee inquiries in a timely manner regarding human resources and payroll questions such as time reports, attendance reports, payments, deductions, contributions, etc.
  • Prepare local bi-weekly payroll reports and reconcile with HRCMS payroll system.
  • Intake, review, complete and disseminate employment verifications for authorized outside entities.
  • Follow established HRCMS data entry conventions for compensation, deductions, and contributions when update employee information.
  • Create and distribute a variety of reports from the HRCMS payroll system through the Commonwealth's EOTSS reporting function.
  • Maintain payroll files in accordance with established procedures.
  • Perform reconciliation of state HRCMS payroll charges to MCC Banner records to ensure consistency and the dual systems are balanced for part-time positions.
  • Perform reconciliation of the full-time positions MMARS payroll charges to the payroll charges in the MCC BANNER system on a macro level to ensure consistency and the dual systems are in balance.
  • Review and process Interview Exchange Renewal Forms and Student Hire forms which requires Budget checking and Encumbrance process.
  • Review and complete Unemployment requests for part time employees.
  • Receive and process MCCC Union Dues for Adjunct Faculty in HRCMS.
  • Receive and process Foundation Deposits on an annual basis.

Human Resources Function:

  • Manage annual and periodic updates to MCC Part-Time Wage Schedule considering internal and external market changes
  • Monitor and manage reclassification/reallocation requests for union employees including conducting of job audits through consultation with employees and applicable supervisors from work area
  • Monitor and manage Non-Unit Professionals (NUP) requests for salary increases including conducting market analysis of role
  • Collaborate with Director of Human Resources to manage and review all salary increase and reclassification requests for union and non-unit employees including the review and analysis of job descriptions
  • Assist, analyze and process union and non-unit salary increases in collaboration with Assistant Director of HR Systems and Reporting
  • Send notifications to employees, both union and non-unit, receiving changes in salary
  • Work with HR team on projects and initiatives.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Job Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business, or a closely related field.
  • 3 to 5 years' experience in human resources, payroll, compensation analysis, salary administration, or closely related human resources/payroll functions
  • Experience maintaining confidentiality and exercising sound judgment in handling sensitive compensation matters.
  • Strong functional knowledge in the areas of payroll and managing employee data
  • Experience conducting market pricing, salary benchmarking, and pay equity analyses.
  • Knowledge of the methods of general report writing.
    Ability to read and interpret documents such as financial reports, accounts and ledgers, and to prepare general and financial reports.
  • Computer proficiency (Microsoft Office programs including Word, PowerPoint, Excel, & Access).
  • Detail-oriented, excellent organizational skills, proactive and accustomed to meeting deadlines, managing competing demands and dealing with frequent change, delays or unexpected events.
  • Effective listening, relationship building and collaboration skills including the ability to remain open to others' ideas and exhibits willingness to try new things.
  • Ability to work independently and the ability to work in a team setting.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in an HR related field
  • Bilingual skills a plus
