Summary

Oversee and lead the consumer lending underwriting department and ensure effective risk management and profitability of the Credit Union by adhering to both state and federal regulations as well as the Credit Union’s strategic plan.

Management Duties

  • Responsible for the hiring, direct supervision, training, development, timecard management, and performance of underwriting staff.
  • Manage and maintain underwriting financial standards by identifying strengths and weaknesses in the lending policies; assisting in analysis of financial impacts of risk on the credit union; selecting and implementing appropriate solutions to assist in minimizing loss.
  • Actively manage underwriting for consumer and indirect lending.
  • Manage several projects at one time.
  • Maintain awareness of current market trends in credit financing.
  • Assist management with loan autopsy reviews in conjunction with the Credit Relations team
  • Assist senior management with participation loan due diligence, including file review analysis, policy and procedure review, and reporting
  • Assist in any other area as directed by the Assistant Vice President of Consumer Lending and/or member of the Senior Management team.
  • Oversee the assignment of underwriting authority to staff and establish controls to monitor their ability to consistently manage risks using the guidelines determined by the Credit Union.
  • Manage and maintain underwriting operational standards defined within the Credit Union’s lending policies.
  • Review all loan applications for Red Flags according to BSA and Identity Theft Red Flag procedures.
  • Report all suspicious activity to the Risk Management department via the compliance group email.

Underwriting Duties

  • Assist Underwriters in reviewing applications when needed, making informed decisions on loan applications.
  • Accomplish underwriting objectives by selecting, orienting, training, assigning, scheduling, coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees; communicating job expectations; planning, monitoring, appraising job contributions; adhering to policies and procedures.
  • Review applications and documentation provided by the lending staff for accuracy and content, including any red flags.
  • Examine documents such as application forms and credit reports, to determine degree of risk from such factors as applicant financial standing, business operations, loss experience, and value and condition of property, vehicles, inventory, and/or equipment.
  • Establish types and limits of coverage to be provided.
  • Calculate standard rates and premium charges by using approved formulas and tables.
  • Consult with lending staff to obtain further information, quote rates, or explain Credit Union underwriting policies.
  • Process and underwrite full range of indirect and direct consumer loans within lending authority limits; evaluate background information including employment history, credit history and debt to income ratio of applicants for consumer loans, lines of credit, and credit cards. Make credit decisions; approve/decline loans; evaluate risk, including any red flags; determine collateral needs and set terms for approved and modification of loans or identify reasons for denial. Review title reports and loan documentation.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of the Credit Union’s lending philosophy and implement the philosophy into daily work. Deepening financial relationships with our members through the identification and cross-selling of additional lending opportunities above and beyond what is presented by account relationship officers will be an expectation.
  • Reviews and recommends revisions as needed in the procedures used with the Branch.

Member Service Expectations:

  • Provide Excellent Member Service at all times to members and staff.
  • Maintain confidentiality in performing assignments relative to any information received directly or indirectly. Ensure that all information and transactions regarding Credit Union members are kept confidential.
  • Understand and adhere to Credit Union policies and applicable regulations including Reg. B & Z, Reg D, TIS and compliance as it applies to member service and loans.
  • Perform any related follow-up tasks to assure problem resolution and member satisfaction.
  • Utilize the computer, software, Internet and telephone system to fulfill our member’s financial needs that arrive through an electronic medium.
  • Maintain professional appearance of work area and notify supervisor/manager when supplies are necessary.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Directly supervises the Underwriting Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems; processing timecards; creating and managing schedules.

Education and/or Experience

Experience - 2 to 5 years related experience.

Education - 4-year college degree or specialized course of study OR 5 years related experience.

Language Skills

Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals such as Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, members, and the general public. Must be able to read and write using the English language.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, amortizations, proportions, percentages, cash flow, net present values, and depreciation. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and arithmetic.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet software and Microsoft Word Processing software.
