Job Summary

Position summary: The Copy & Production editor is responsible for copyediting Harvard Magazine online and in print. This principal responsibility entails editing a significant volume of news stories, which may be published solely or originally online at www.harvardmagazine.com, and in the bimonthly print magazine; and for coordinating with colleagues about their own news assignments, and freelance reporting assignments. The Copy & Production editor will also report and write articles for all other sections of the magazine, including long-form features.

Position Description

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Copyediting the entire print magazine (includes both substantive content editing and fact-checking, as needed, and editing for correct grammar, diction, and stylistic consistency); all online editorial contents; and special promotional materials such as ads publicizing the magazine’s website, fundraising, and other activities.
  • Print production. Forwarding final pages to the outside proofreader for checking, and collating corrections from editors’ reviews and revisions, and proofreader revisions, with the creative director to prepare final files for printing.
  • Reviewing and proofing the online editorial contents of the entire magazine for style and content before it is posted.
  • Supervising and assisting the contributing editors who produce the copy and initial layouts for the class notes and obituaries departments. Verifying the degree status of individuals whose news is submitted for class notes, proofing and updating both contributing editors’ copy as needed, and acquiring, assigning, and on occasion writing parts of the subsidiary sections thereof (query boxes, nuggets), plus coordinating the layouts, with edited texts in place, of both sections. Serving in addition as the magazine’s primary contact with Harvard and Radcliffe class secretaries.

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required
• 3-5 years professional writing and editing, including some supervisory responsibilities
• Online and print publication experience

• Superb attention to detail
• Demonstrated ability to work under frequent deadlines
• Ability to work independently (finding story ideas, researching, reporting, writing, and revising), take initiative, set priorities, and work collaboratively with a small, professional team
• Must be able to work nights and weekends as deadlines/reporting require, and to travel domestically and internationally

Additional requirements/information:
• Applications must be accompanied by:

—at least three nonfiction writing samples, presenting diverse formats, assignments, lengths, and subjects covered.
• Applications will be reviewed as they are received; qualified candidates will be required to complete a writing test before interviews are conducted.
• Harvard’s posted salary range for this position is wide; in keeping with the magazine’s compensation structure, the compensation for this position is in the lower half of the salary-grade range.
• Position is based at the magazine’s offices in Cambridge, Massachusetts, on the Harvard University campus; some work conducted on a hybrid basis.
• Familiarity with Harvard University and/or research universities and higher education a strong plus

Technology requirements: Microsoft Office, full suite of social-media software and programs; Drupal (the magazine’s online operating platform) and Adobe InCopy (production software) a plus, but can be taught on the job

Work Format Details

This is a hybrid position that is based in Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
