Workplace Location: Los Angeles – Academy Museum


The Custodial Lead will assist in overseeing the work of the custodial team to clean and maintain the Academy Museum to the highest standards. You will also be responsible for overseeing the preparation, set-up, staffing, and clean-up for numerous events throughout the year.


This position is being represented by a union.


Essential Functions of the Job:

  • Assist with planning, scheduling, organizing, coordinating, inspecting, supervising, and evaluating the work of custodial and set-up services staff in the upkeep of the museum.
  • Serve as team leader in custodial and set-up services on assigned shift.
  • Assist with providing training to staff in the proper and efficient performance of custodial duties according to the training program implemented by the museum.
  • Assist with evaluating personnel.
  • Maintain and issue custodial supplies.
  • Inspect and evaluate the condition of the buildings, grounds, equipment, machinery, and sidewalks; make maintenance improvement recommendations to the supervisor.
  • Undertake comprehensive and ongoing training for the custodial team.
  • Assist with coordinating set up and break down of tables, chairs, and linens for various meetings, programs, events, and other activities.
  • Establish and maintain a positive and respectful attitude with peers, subordinates, supervisors, administrators, and visitors.
  • Ensure that all work is performed in conformance with the museum’s safety programs.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Required Competencies:

  • A high school diploma or equivalent certificate of completion is required; an equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered in lieu of a high school diploma or certification.
  • 1+ years of custodial experience as a lead/supervisor or 3+ years of progressive leadership responsibility in the custodial trade.
  • Knowledge of safe and correct handling of cleaning supplies, materials, tools, equipment, and methods used in the custodial trade, and in the repair and maintenance of cleaning equipment.
  • Knowledge of applicable Cal-OSHA and OSHA regulations.
  • Knowledge of basic and modern cleaning methods, including preserving floors, whiteboards, carpets, furniture, walls, fixtures, locker rooms, and restrooms.
  • A commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion.
  • Flexibility to work various outside of normal business hours including some overtime, late nights, weekends, and holidays.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System) is a plus.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of supervising and training others is a plus.
  • Bilingual skills in English/Spanish highly preferred.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in fluctuating temperatures.
  • Ability to work under adverse situations and conditions (e.g., dirty, noisy, etc).
  • Comfortably work on ladders, lifts, and heights.
  • Ability to repeatedly move, push, pull, and transport up to 50 pounds and kneel/bend/stoop/squat for extended periods.

Compensation: The salary range for this role is $25.00 - $27.00 per hour. The actual base pay offered will be determined by factors such as experience, skills, training, location, certifications, education, and other factors permitted by law. Decisions will be made on a case-by-case basis.
