Job Summary
The CHS dean serves as the chief academic officer, administrative officer and spokesperson for the college. Reporting directly to the provost, the dean holds a tenured faculty rank (professor) while providing strong and visionary leadership and strategic direction for the academic departments, programs and initiatives within a complex fiscal environment. The dean ensures the college’s academic, research, and service missions are achieved and that the college is well-positioned to address evolving challenges and opportunities within the fields of health sciences. The dean will also support and strengthen essential partnerships with UK HealthCare, the university’s nationally ranked academic medical system, which includes the Albert B. Chandler Hospital, Kentucky Children’s Hospital and a comprehensive network of specialized outpatient clinics and services.
With a demonstrated commitment to teaching, scholarship, research productivity and service, the dean will be a recognized scholar with both a national and international profile who can amplify the visibility and reputation of the College of Health Sciences at the University of Kentucky.
Responsibilities
- Identify and establish fundraising priorities and secure gifts from alumni, corporations, foundations and/or supporters.
- Lead critical partnerships within the university’s health care system and UK HealthCare.
- Allocate college resources, including faculty, staff, financial resources, space, furniture and equipment.
- Schedule and preside over CHS Executive Council meetings; set agenda in consultation with administrators and Faculty Council.
- Appoint CHS Promotion and Tenure Committee (in consultation with the college’s Faculty Council), Appeals Committee and ad hoc committees.
- Consult on risk management issues (e.g., FERPA, sexual harassment, discrimination, HIPAA, etc.).
- Foster an environment of shared governance by building relations with all campus communities while shepherding a culture of collaboration.
- Lead the development and implementation of a strategy that will position the college as among the highest rated in the country for extramurally funded research, in conjunction with the vice president for research.
- Make recommendations on appointments, reappointments, terminal appointments, decisions not to reappoint, post-retirement appointments, promotions, granting of tenure, salaries and salary changes for members of the college or for ultimate action thereon when such authority has been delegated by the president or provost.
- Conduct periodic reviews of academic units relative to their missions, administration and finances and make recommendations for improving their performance as outlined in the Administrative Regulations.
- Serve as a chief administrative officer for the college. The dean will be expected to meet regularly with the provost for both individual meetings and as part of regular meetings with the other deans.
Assume such other duties and responsibilities as may be requested by the provost.
Goals and Objectives
The next dean of CHS will step into an exceptional leadership opportunity. Among the responsibilities assigned to this position, the dean is expected to give particular attention to the following leadership goals:
- Articulating and implementing a strategic plan to support the mission of the college and the university, whose goal is to help the people of the Commonwealth of Kentucky and beyond attain the highest level of health possible.
- In alignment with the university’s strategic plan, the dean will be expected to engage faculty, staff, students and partners to develop clear strategic priorities to move the college forward. This includes developing future leaders of the health sciences workforce, advancing innovation and health sciences practice and serving as a connector with health sciences partners across Kentucky, the nation and the world.
- Leveraging community engagement and team science to promote research growth.
- The dean will also help the college maintain essential partnerships with UK HealthCare, the university’s nationally ranked academic medical system. UK HealthCare includes the Albert B. Chandler Hospital, Kentucky Children’s Hospital, Eastern State Hospital, UK St. Claire, UK King’s Daughters and a comprehensive network of specialized outpatient clinics and services.
- CHS is part of a world-class teaching and research university, serving the Commonwealth as the flagship, land-grant institution. UK is also a comprehensive campus with all colleges, schools and libraries co-located. The new RHEB will increase the proximity even more — and expertise and partners will be closely positioned in the CHS to broaden impact by growing powerful interdisciplinary programs, teams and collaborations.
- Being visible and involved in advancement opportunities.
- As a key leader within the university and with the construction of the new RHEB, the next dean will play a key role in fundraising and advancement opportunities. The need to raise money will remain constant. It will require dedicated and strategic time by the dean. Fundraising efforts will include working with the university’s Office of Philanthropy and Alumni Engagement in formulating and implementing a philanthropic and development strategy that supports the college’s research, education, scholarship, capital and long-term needs.
