What You Will Do

  • Provide chairside assistance to dental students, faculty, or residents performing procedures, following the dentists specific directions.

  • Record oral conditions, preliminary medical and dental histories, and vital signs as directed by the provider.

  • Maintain the operatory by preparing, cleaning, and disinfecting before and after each patient; prepare disinfectant solutions as needed.

  • Escort patients to and from the operatory and radiology areas; expose and process radiographs with faculty approval.

  • Ensure dental records are complete and properly signed; complete all required work in the clinical management software system (axiUm).

  • Maintain and report on equipment functionality; clean, sterilize, sharpen, and dispense instruments and materials; track equipment on loan.

  • Manage inventory of supplies, instruments, and linens in operatories, labs, and dispensing areas; ensure proper disposal of needles and anesthetic carpules.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications

1.High school diploma or equivalent.
2.Any one of the following categories below:

  • Six (6 months) of work experience in dental assisting comparable to that performed at the Dental Assistant I level of this series.
  • Graduation from an accredited Dental Assisting School.
  • Current Certification as a Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) by the Dental Assisting National Board, if required by the employing institution.

Preferred Qualifications
High school graduate or equivalent and one year (12 months) of work experience in dental assisting comparable to that performed at the Dental Assistant I level of this series. Or Graduation from an accredited dental assisting school. Any one or any combination of the following, totaling Two years (24 months) of experience in the following categories: Work experience in dental assisting comparable to that performed at the Dental Assistant I level of this series. Graduation from an accredited dental assisting school. Or Current Certification as a Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) by the Dental Assisting National Board.

This person will have in-depth knowledge and/or experience in assisting in general dentistry. Thorough understanding of the disinfecting and sterilization of instruments and equipment and the preparation of treatment trays. Must be able to operate a computer in order to work in the clinical management software on a daily basis. Must have thorough knowledge and understand how to enter treatment information in patient charts. Must know how to properly expose and develop radiographs. Must know the instruments, equipment, materials and techniques used in general dentistry in order to participate in four-hand sit down dentistry in the clinic.
