The Global Advertising and Brand Management (GABM) team is responsible for creating marketplace demand and driving commerce for American Express products and services through differentiated and innovative branding, marketing, and experiences. The Global Brand Strategy team sits within GABM and is responsible for the development and activation of American Express’ overarching, long-term brand strategy, shaping who we are, what our brand stands for and its positioning in the market.
The Director, Global Brand Strategy is responsible for translating the Global Brand Strategy into compelling insights-led annual and initiative-specific marketing plans, aligning brand priorities with broader Enterprise goals.We are seeking a strategic, creative and analytically minded leader who can energize cross-functional teams and agency partners to drive brand growth, differentiation and relevance for American Express.
This position reports to the Vice President, Brand Strategy.
Core Responsibilities
- Lead the annual strategic brand marketing planning process, setting a near-term, insights-led marketing strategy for GABM to effectively drive Brand Consideration
- Lead the evaluation of business priorities to determine strategic focus areas for brand investment, identifying initiatives with the greatest potential to strengthen brand KPIs and merit above-the-line marketing support
- Own and evolve brand architecture and hierarchy, codifying principles into practical tools to guide business and creative decisions
- Lead project-based strategy engagements to future-proof the Global Brand Strategy and advance brand and business goals
- Monitor and translate emerging market dynamics, category shifts and audience behaviors to ensure annual plans remain timely, relevant and impactful
Qualifications
- 8–10+ years of experience in marketing, brand strategy, or management consulting, with a track record of shaping and executing strategic initiatives
- Exceptional communicator—clear, persuasive, and confident in influencing and aligning senior leaders across levels and functions
- Proven leader in fast-paced, matrixed environments, able to inspire collaboration and drive clarity amid complexity
- Resilient and solutions-oriented, maintaining composure under pressure and applying creativity to overcome challenges
- Deep passion for brand, marketing, and the customer, grounded in a sharp external perspective
- Inspiring people leader who coaches high-performing teams, fosters collaboration, and builds an inclusive, high-energy culture
Salary Range: $123,000.00 to $215,250.00 annually + bonus + equity (if applicable) + benefits
