Physical Requirements

The physical requirements of this position include: Occasional lifting, pushing, and/or pulling objects up to 50lbs; occasional standing or walking with objects 30-45lbs; regularly sitting at a computer workstation for extended periods of time with regular repetitive motions (such as typing); utilizing mouse, keyboard, and phone for portions of the day. Ability to traverse on and off-campus for meetings and to provide service. Must be able to communicate effectively with individuals of diverse backgrounds and varied professional levels.

Shift

Primarily days (i.e. Monday – Friday, 8a-5p ) As an exempt position, job duties may occasionally require additional time in the evenings, nights, holidays and/or weekends to accomplish work goals in excess of 40 hours per week. Required to participate in rotational oncall including nights weekends and holidays. May be required to report when the Univeristy is closed to provide treatment & support to our research animals.

Job Summary

The primary goal of DLAR is to facilitate the conduct of animal research in a humane manner fully compliant with all Federal, State and Local regulations. DLAR staff maintain compliance with all the relevant regulations and policies as they pertain to the use of all University animals in biomedical research and maintain good standing through AAALAC, adhering to the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.

The DLAR Lab Animal Veterinarian Associate Director will educate University faculty, staff and IACUC members on issues relating to humane and appropriate care and use of animals used in biomedical research. Assist researchers in protocol development and execution. Serve as a mentor for DLAR veterinarians with less experience and training. Provide oversight and operational management of DLAR Programs which may include:

Experimental Surgical Unit, Rodent Surgery Program, Quarantine and Sentinel Program, Breeding and Technical Services, Veterinary Services, Necropsy and Histopathology.
