Physical Requirements

Requires heavy lifting, pushing or pulling of objects over 40 pounds; animal handling (including carcasses); risk of injuries from use of equipment on the job; exposure to temperature extremes, cuts/punctures, and bloodborne/airborne pathogens.

Shift

Days (Monday – Friday, 7:30 am – 4:30 pm), On-Call required, rotating weekends, holidays and evenings as needed. Please be aware that as an exempt position, job duties will occasionally require additional time in the evenings, nights, holidays and/or weekends to accomplish work goals in excess of 40 hours per week.

Job Summary

The Division of Laboratory Animal Resources (DLAR) supports this mission by providing high-quality veterinary care, ensuring animal welfare, and maintaining a fully compliant and AAALAC-accredited program.

The DLAR Lab Animal Veterinarian Senior serves as a senior clinical and programmatic leader responsible for delivering comprehensive veterinary care and advancing animal health and welfare across DLAR facilities. This position provides expert oversight of clinical operations, collaborates with veterinary staff and investigators, and ensures compliance with all applicable regulatory and accreditation standards, including USDA, IACUC, AAALAC, and institutional policies.

The role functions as a key liaison between DLAR and the research community, offering consultative support in study design, animal model development, surgical procedures, anesthesia/analgesia planning, and humane endpoints. The incumbent contributes to program development, training initiatives, and continuous improvement efforts while supporting inspection readiness and regulatory reporting.

This position requires advanced clinical judgment, strong leadership and communication skills, and the ability to manage complex and evolving research needs while maintaining the highest standards of animal care, scientific integrity, and regulatory compliance.
