Physical Requirements
The physical requirements of this position include: Animal handling (including carcasses); risk of injuries from use of equipment on the job; exposure to temperature extremes, cuts/punctures, and bloodborne/airborne pathogens. Must be able to stand for prolonged periods of time. Must demonstrate the ability to assess the cleanliness of cages and accessories. Occasional lifting, pushing, and/or pulling objects up to 50 lbs; regularly sitting at a computer workstation for extended periods of time with regular repetitive motions (such as typing); utilizing mouse, keyboard, and phone for portions of the day. Ability to travel to various locations on and off-campus for meetings and to provide training.
Shift
Primarily days (i.e. Monday – Friday, 7a-4p) Please be aware that as an exempt position, job duties may occasionally require additional time in the evenings, nights, holidays and/or weekends to accomplish work goals in excess of 40 hours per week.
Job Summary
Responsible for development and implementation of basic husbandry and technical skills training. Training will range from one-on-one sessions to small group instruction for departmental staff and may be provided via web, didactic, and hands-on methods. The trainer must have the ability to effectively implement training approaches to an audience and to understand various learning styles of adult learners and adapt training accordingly. They need to have extensive knowledge and/or experience in the care and use of laboratory animals. Experience with USDA covered lab animal species is preferred. They will be responsible for managing training documentation and supporting compliance with training mandates, and have excellent interpersonal skills.
All actions are completed strictly and consistently following applicable DLAR SOPs including safety procedures and guidelines. Reports any suspected or actual deviations to SOPs or non-routine situations immediately to Group Leader or their Supervisor. Arrives, leaves and takes breaks at work as scheduled. Strictly adheres to DLAR attendance policy
Skills/Abilities/Competencies Required
• Knowledge of various laboratory animal care topics. Experience with multiple animal species.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite. Proficiency using database, spreadsheet and presentation applications (i.e. Microsoft Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, Access, Word).
• Possess strong leadership and interpersonal skills. Be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
• Good organizational and time management skills. Self-motivated, able to work independently, highly organized with a strong attention to detail
• Ability to work reliably with minimal supervision, Self-starter with strong sense of ownership and involvement.
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, as well as changing priorities along with fluctuations in the workload.
• Ability to work independently and with teams.
• Knowledge of training program development; experience conducting hands-on training of staff
• Has a customer-focused attitude and enjoys working with similarly dedicated persons in a team fashion within a high-energy research environment.
• Proven track record of working cooperatively and effectively with different groups at various skill levels and a wide range of abilities.
• Willing to pursue continuous improvement in the duties described above, including but not limited to additional training and continuing education opportunities as they may arise.
