Job Purpose and Summary
This position is responsible for the development and administration of the Microgrid Energy Program for the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) contributing to the sustainability initiatives and strategic energy goals. Incumbent must have a full understanding of microgrid systems which are localized energy systems that consist of distributed energy resources such as solar panels, batteries, and generators across the Turnpike system. Work includes modeling, forecasting, and analysis of microgrid system performance using a virtual system to project financial models for projects and focus on enhancing energy resilience, sustainability, cost reduction, and efficiency for internal consumption and the optimization of energy production to sell to external sources. Work is generally performed with independence and reviewed for attainment of goals, completion of assignments, and overall performance.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
Leads, develops, and administers the PTC’s Microgrid Energy Program. Collaborates in the development and implementation of innovative technological systems and enhancements to improve program efficiency and effectiveness.
Serves as the subject matter expert on cross-functional project teams to develop or enhance microgrid systems and technology from feasibility to implementation. Leads feasibility studies and develops sustainable energy strategies and recommendations.
Develops financial models of potential costs/earnings for the full life cycle of the project. Assists with the development of plans, specifications, standards, interconnection agreements, and cost estimates.
Models and forecasts scenarios, utilizing a virtual microgrid system, to project microgrid performance and identify energy-saving opportunities, guide energy procurement, and identify goals and strategies for future consumption and/or revenue. Completes pro forma to project future savings.
Analyzes and reports on the organization’s energy efficiency, sustainability, and consumption focusing on cost reduction, regulatory compliance, and reducing environmental impact.
Gathers financial data from eGordian platform and field managers. Monitors and analyzes costs, consumption, and production data to identify opportunities for tax rebates. Provides detailed information to finance to submit.
Coordinates and engages in the ongoing enhancement, patching, and firmware lifecycle management of devices supporting solar Microgrid systems. Ensures these systems are stable and operate securely and optimally across virtual labs, field deployments, and control layer environments.
Develops demand response agreements and coordinates with utility providers to sell excess energy.
Analyzes microgrid systems performance to drive sustainability goals, ensure efficient productivity, and compliance with evolving codes and environmental regulations. Attends field meetings and inspections for microgrid systems as necessary.
Monitors the work of consultants/contractors. Identifies potential problems/issues and reports to manager or project team. Reviews invoices prepared by consultants.
Maintains professional relationships with internal and external stakeholders for energy conservation initiatives.
Conducts and/or participates in designated meetings, committees, planning groups, or seminars.
Uses situational awareness to anticipate and prevent accidents.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Eight (8) years of experience in Information Technology, Finance, or Engineering;
OR
Four (4) years of experience in Information Technology, Finance, or Engineering AND a bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Finance, or Engineering;
Equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be accepted.
Must obtain one of the following certifications within one (1) year of employment with the PTC:
• Certified Energy Manager (CEM)
• Certified Microgrid Engineer (CMIE)
• Energy Storage and Microgrid Certification (ESAMTC)
• Renewable Energy Professional (REP)
Possession of a valid driver’s license. Must obtain and maintain a valid Pennsylvania driver’s license within six (6) months of employment.

Physical Demands and Work Environment
Position demands include frequent speaking, writing, and reading reports. Position requires frequent work at a computer utilizing business programs and PTC specific operating systems. Position requires frequent travel and/or fieldwork and exposure to roadway traffic. Occasionally works outside of normal business hours for assigned work assignments.
Office environment with low levels of noise, adequate lighting, and comfortable temperature. Field environment may include exposure to moderately adverse and undesirable conditions. Physical environment is generally safe, but safety equipment or precautions must be followed in field conditions.
