The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) is recruiting for an Engineer Trainee for the Bureau of Air Management. This position will be located within the Planning & Standards Division's Air Monitoring Group at 9 Windsor Ave., Windsor, CT.

The target class for this position is Air Pollution Control Engineer 1. Engineer Trainees receive training under the direction of a supervisor and senior staff before being promoted to Air Pollution Control Engineer 1 upon successful completion of the training period.

POSITION DETAILS
This is a full-time, 35 hour per week position on first shift. Schedule is Monday-Friday and will be located at DEEP's Windsor Lab.

Duties of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Assist in maintaining and repairing air quality instrumentation and equipment;
  • Assist in the implementation and maintenance of the computerized environmental information system;
  • Compile data for analysis to determine air pollution monitor performance;
  • Validate data by analyzing data reports and graphs and site computer acquired air quality information;
  • Review air pollution data for validity, maintain records of work performed and supplies used;
  • Assist in updating and making recommendations for routine quality control procedures used for installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of air pollution monitoring equipment;
  • Attend classroom training, workshops or seminars to maintain and grow knowledge of the latest technology, information, research, within the field of air monitoring;
  • May assist in acceptance testing of new equipment and preparing report on findings;
  • May assist in preparing memorandum and correspondence as needed.
*Salary Note: Upon successful completion of one year in this class, incumbents will receive a pay increase to $67,343/year.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)


In a state agency this class is accountable for receiving training in introductory professional engineering work for the development of technical and professional engineering skills and knowledge in order to qualify for advancement to the technical engineering work of the agency.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY


  • Knowledge of basic engineering theories, principles and methods;
  • Skill in the use of drafting and calculating instruments;
  • Considerable ability to perform mathematical computations, making neat and accurate drawings and preparing minor design and structural details;
  • Ability to utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE


Candidates must be able to meet the experience and training requirements of the designated job class at the completion of the development program.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS


  • Experience with operating and maintaining instrumentation used to measure air pollutant and meteorological concentrations or conditions;
  • Experience operating and maintaining environmental monitoring instrumentation or equipment
  • Experience with installing, servicing, repairing, or maintaining electronic equipment;
  • Experience communicating technical information to technical and non-technical audiences;
  • Experience reading and interpreting schematics, diagrams, and service manuals;
  • Experience summarizing information, preparing reports and making recommendations based on findings;
  • Experience with computers and standard software packages.
  • Experience working in a team environment as well as independently.
  • Experience setting priorities and meeting deadlines.
