Description:
The Environmental Health and Safety Specialist collaborates with the other team members in evaluating, planning, developing, and implementing occupational safety and health program elements in accordance with applicable federal, state, and local regulatory requirements and best business practices. The work requires coordinating with multiple disciplines and providing support to a diverse group of customers.

Pay range for this position is $32.45/hr to $40.58/hr. Compensation for the selected candidate will depend on candidate qualifications and experience related to the position requirements.

Essential Functions

• Assists with the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of a comprehensive occupational safety and health program that is fully integrated with other business objectives.
• Develops and maintains strong working relationships with business partners regarding occupational safety and health.
• Helps interpret applicable safety standards and regulations related to occupational safety and health, particularly in the utility industry.
• Conducts safety audits, and workplace analyses that evaluate the effectiveness of occupational safety procedures; assesses the degree of compliance with applicable standards; and develops and recommends changes to eliminate or reduce hazards.
• Investigates and evaluates injuries and incidents for root causes and develop and implement measures to mitigate or eliminate the unsafe conditions.
• Provides education and training to employees on applicable occupational safety and health programs, practices, and procedures.
• Evaluates work practices and procedures to help determine training requirements. Helps implement methods to evaluate the effectiveness of safety and health training programs.
• Assists with the implementation of a workers’ compensation program. Helps ensure that incidents are reported and documented and that corrective actions are implemented.
• Assists with the development and implementation of an effective safety metrics program. Helps maintain appropriate logs and records of occupational safety and health incidents.
• Assists with the development of materials and information pertaining to new employee orientation.
• Serves as role model for proper occupational safety and health behavior in the workplace.
• Works with assigned safety vendors and contractors.
• Responds as necessary to safety emergencies or other time sensitive activities.

Qualifications:

Required Education & Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Safety Management, Industrial Hygiene, or a related field.
• Two years of professional safety experience.

Note: An equivalent combination of education, professional certification, and experience may be considered in meeting the qualifications above.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and standards in safety and health.
• Knowledge of occupational safety and health management concepts, principles, practices, and procedures.
• Experience in accident and incident investigation, including root cause analysis and corrective action.
• Knowledge of analytical techniques such as job hazard analysis and prevention through design.
• Experience in performing reviews, inspections, and program analysis to reinforce strengths and to identify opportunities for improvement.
• Ability to develop, write, and present subject matter as it relates to current risks and exposures.
• Ability to articulate complex issues verbally and in writing to technical and non-technical employees. Ability to be a good listener.
• Possess an understanding of effective adult education methods, training program development and presentation experience.
• Proven organizational skills.
• Proficiency with Microsoft applications.
• Availability to support the needs of the organization as required during all shifts and emergency events.
• Possess a valid driver’s license and continually meet WaterOne driving standards.
• Ability to successfully complete pre-employment drug screening and background verification with WaterOne standards.


Preferred Qualifications

• Professional certification such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Hazardous Material Manager (CHMM), or Graduate Safety Professional (GSP).
• Utility, chemical or construction safety experience.
• Occupational training specifically related to the construction industry.



Physical Requirements

An employee in this position may lift or move up to 5 lbs. constantly, 10 Ibs. frequently, 20 Ibs. occasionally, and 40 Ibs. rarely. Employees in this position may frequently work in outdoor weather conditions. Outside working conditions are dependent on the weather, which involves extreme heat (above 90 degrees) in the summer and cold in the winter (below freezing). Some work may be in non-heated and non-air-conditioned structures. Employees in this position may also perform field assignments in poor weather and driving conditions and deal with other hazards of field work such as working at varying heights up to 15 feet above the floor and tolerate noise levels that are generally minimal but may be excessive for brief periods of time (hearing protection is provided).


This position requires the ability to remain in a stationary, standing and/or sitting position for up to several hours a day. Employees must be able to constantly operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a copy machine, telephone, and computer and be able to move from one location to another. Employees must be able to ascend and descend ladders to work on equipment, including climbing water towers and other structures. In addition, they must be able to stand or work on elevated surfaces. Employees are required to use personal protective equipment and navigate construction sites.

The work environment for this position is a typical office setting. Employees will be expected to work in a professional office environment that includes tasks performed at a desk, using standard office equipment such as computers, phones, printers, and filing systems. The job duties for this position sometimes take place in the field and/or plant environment where exposure to various environmental factors such as chemicals, noise from machinery, and fluctuating temperatures is likely and personal protective equipment may be required. The noise level when working in the field and/or plant environment is usually moderate to maximum.
