Job Summary

| ESH Recreation Leader plans, implements, coordinates, and participates in the conducting of recreational activities for patients. Recreation Leaders will collaborate with Recreation Therapists to provide a recreation program for their assigned unit. Recreation Leaders administer rehab services screening assessments and is a member of a multidisciplinary treatment team for their assigned unit. Recreation Leaders lead groups both on the unit and in the recovery mall. Plans, organizes and conducts recreation programs and activities. Leads groups and collaborates with Recreation Therapists to coordinate environmental support activities for their assigned unit. Keeps daily attendance and participation records. Conducts basic assessment of patient needs, and documents patient behavior in the medical record. Recommends needed purchases for the department and maintains supplies and equipment. Attends treatment team meetings and provides information concerning patient involvement in programming. Attends departmental and other meetings and training sessions. Plans and supervises recreational activities which meet the individual needs and interests of each patient. Utilizes effective communication skills when leading groups, and when interacting with patients. Ensures each patient’s rights to confidentiality, dignity, and respect. All interpersonal relationships reflect respect, concern, and courtesy for others. Encourages participation in both unit and recovery mall groups and activities as part of their treatment during their hospital stay. Utilizes preventive, supportive, and restorative measures to promote comfort and optimum physiological and psychological well-being, considering the age, diagnosis, and condition of the patient. Recreation Leaders assist in planning monthly outings and parties and recommend 1:1 needs for their assigned units to the Recreation Therapists. Evaluates and documents the effectiveness of the care he/she provides. Fosters a sense of teamwork and collaboration within the department and hospital, and demonstrates effective verbal and written communication. Works closely with other members of the healthcare team. Builds therapeutic rapport and de-escalates patient situations as needed. Demonstrates the appropriate use of personal protective equipment/attire; follows established hospital infection control guidelines and follows isolation precautions for infectious patients. Use all equipment in a safe and effective manner and report all incidents appropriately. Works to contribute to a restraint-free environment. Completes accurate and legible recording in the medical record. Follows established HIPPA regulations, communicates pertinent information related to patient care, and provides communication during patient hand-off to all healthcare providers. Develops and continuously works to improve group programming for both Recovery Mall and on-unit programming. Assists patients in developing an interest in positive leisure activities to continue after discharge. Maintains patient areas and program work spaces in a clean, neat and orderly manner. Ensures all equipment and supplies are utilized in a proper and safe manner; broken and faulty equipment is reported to appropriate persons. Cost awareness, concern for containment, and conservation of resources are reflected in patient care activities. Functions as a part of the recovery team and maintains an integrated services system that focuses on patient recovery, collaborates with other disciplines, departments, and treatment teams, and ensures a collaborative approach to patient care. Works directly with clinical and non-clinical staff in resolving patient problems and service issues. Ensure high level of satisfaction from patients related to services. Facilitate communication of the philosophy of a customer-focused environment and the expectation of service excellence. Participates in goal of restraint-free patient environment. Identifies and communicates opportunities for improvement. Maintains Professional and Technical knowledge by reviewing professional publications and completing required annual training within established timeframes. Work hours may vary. Other related duties, as assigned. Exhibits personal engagement in patient and employee satisfaction initiatives. Has current understanding of patient and employee satisfaction scores and goals in work area. Takes ownership for comments as applicable, initiates self and team improvement plans. Fosters and models interdisciplinary team collaboration to achieve desired clinical outcomes and improve culture. Expresses and demonstrates willingness to assist team and other departments during increased capacity by being flexible with schedule and willing to work in other areas.



Skills / Knowledge / Abilities

Bachelor Degree in Recreation, Psychology or related field. Experience of 6 months or less is preferred.
