Description

The purpose of this position is to design and carry out local- and site-level suitability analysis for potential sites for the Cosmic Explorer Observatory (a future gravitational-wave observatory) using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). This work will be supervised by Dr. Joshua Smith.

*Please be aware that funding for this position is awarded through a Grant/Contract over a specified period. Employment for this position beyond current Grant/Contract funding is contingent upon continued funding or new Grant/Contract.

Essential Duties

  • Local and site-level suitability analysis.
  • Calibration of GIS systems between those implemented in ArcGIS and those implemented in Python.
  • Implementation of land cut.
  • Fill estimates into ArcGIS.
  • Accounting for the presence of roads, wells, windmills, flood areas, and other factors.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Familiarity with suitability analysis using GIS and ArcGIS.
  • Experience with geographic assessment of siting aspects for the Cosmic Explorer gravitational-wave observatory, which poses unique challenges, such as 25-mile long arms.

EDUCATION:
  • Minimum Master’s degree in geography or GIST, or a related field.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Prolonged sitting in front of computer. Walking, talking, hearing, pulling, bending, may carry 10-25 pounds of objects/material, not exposed to extreme noise level, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands or arms, stoop, kneel, taste or smell.
