Reports to: Associate Curator

Job Type: Seasonal

Workplace Location: Los Angeles - Academy Museum

Summary/Objective:

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures is seeking an organized, enthusiastic intern to assist the Curatorial team. The intern will make a critical contribution in research and organization in support of the museum's upcoming temporary exhibition Cinelandia: Filmmaking in the U.S.-Mexico Borderlands. Scheduled to open in Fall 2027, the gallery exhibition will focus on cinematic exchanges between the U.S. and Mexico, particularly centering the Chicano Movement and subsequent films-shared through a wide range of costumes, props, set pieces, posters, scripts, personal artifacts, media installations and immersive experiences.

The intern will be involved in a wide range of curatorial activities, including assisting with exhibition and publication checklists, conducting original research at local archives, organizing publication images, and drafting exhibition text. The ideal candidate will be a rigorous researcher and strong organizer, able to create bibliographies and filmographies, organize image files, and draft and edit research summaries. Candidates should possess a keen interest in curating, film, writing, and research, as well as a curiosity for under-represented voices and themes in international cinema history.

Under the guidance of an experienced curatorial staff, the intern will gain in-depth experience in preparation and planning for an exhibition that explores a lesser-known, international film history for a wide audience.

Beyond the primary project, the Curatorial intern will be managed as part of the overall Academy Gold internship and mentorship program. The Gold program's eight-week summer core program provides an overview of filmmaking as an art form, profession, and a discipline, which includes current film archival and preservation. This also includes access to Academy members and IATSE union members through year-round panels, workshops, small group Q&As, networking and career development events, and post-COVID on-set experiences.
