The State of Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) invites its agency employees to apply for the position of Head Motor Vehicle Examiner with a current opening in Enfield and anticipated openings in Bridgeport, Cheshire, Danbury, Hamden, New Britain, Norwalk, Norwich, Old Saybrook, Waterbury, Wethersfield, and Windham (Willimantic).

THE ROLE
Branch operations is the core of DMV. Every day, we serve thousands of customers in the branches who rely on us for answers and support. If you’re the kind of person who enjoys helping teammates tackle complex questions and transactions—and you’re looking to take the next step in your career—this could be the ideal opportunity.
As a Head Motor Vehicle Examiner, you’ll play a vital role in daily branch operations, working closely with the branch manager and supporting both staff and customers. This is a customer-facing position where your expertise in issuing identification credentials and registrations will be put to good use. You’ll need to be hands-on, ready to train staff, and comfortable assisting with challenging transactions and inquiries.
We have anticipated openings in several branch locations, and you may occasionally travel to support other DMV branch locations. If you’re looking for a rewarding, people-focused role with room to grow, we’d love to hear from you.

- Thursday: 9:00 AM - 6:15 PM

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Departmentof Motor Vehicles branch offices and units within the central office this classis accountable for acting as a working supervisor for a unit responsible forthe issuance of operators' licenses, titles and/or registrations.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Assigns duties and reviews results for accuracy, effectiveness and conformance with policy;
- Reviews and evaluates courtesy and attitude toward the public and other employees;
- Studies and analyzes office tasks performed;
- Oversees and coordinates the daily work involved in the issuance of official motor vehicle documents;
- Prioritizes, schedules and assigns duties;
- Maintains proper workflow;
- Provides on the job training to unit staff;
- Resolves individual work-related problems;
- Maintains daily records;
- Orders supplies;
- Ensures the accuracy and efficiency of unit work;
- Completes inventory and production reports;
- Obtains from and provides information to a variety of personnel within other divisions, departments or the public;
- Examines and processes applications and supporting documentation;
- Issues official documents;
- Operates automated and other office equipment;
- Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Five (5) years of clerical experience.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE
Two (2) years of the General Experience must have involved the issuance of official documents requiring the examination of applications and supporting documentation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
- College training may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of two (2) years.
- Two (2) years of experience as a Motor Vehicle Examiner or one (1) year of experience as a Motor Vehicle Examiner Specialist may be substituted for the General and Special Experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience with Issuance of driver's Licenses, Non-Driver Identifications, Registrations, and review of required documents
- Experience reviewing immigration documents
- Experience addressing customer complaints and de-escalating issues with customers
- Experience with SalesForce appointment scheduler and MPay (Main Payment) processes
- Experience training co-workers and new staff
- Experience working independently and making decisions based on guidelines and procedures
- Experience managing tasks or priorities while meeting deadlines
- Experience communicating with customers of diverse populations
