As an Hourly WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselor within the Whitfield County WIC Departmentat the Georgia Department of Public Health, you will join a dedicated group of public health professionals that help support the overall mission and vision of protecting the lives of Georgian residents in a variety of ways.

Location: Whitfield County WIC Department in Dalton, GA.

This is an hourly position that works up to a maximum of 16 hours per week.

Job Responsibilities

Under immediate to general supervision, provides limited paraprofessional social services to clients and their families

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides individual breastfeeding education in the WIC clinic as needed.
  • Provides ongoing breastfeeding education and/or counseling to pregnant and breastfeeding mothers by telephone, home visits, and/or hospital visits at scheduled intervals as determined by the local WIC Program.
  • Gives basic breastfeeding information and support to new mothers which includes education on the benefits of breastfeeding, overcoming common barriers, and how to start breastfeeding successfully.
  • Uses proper and consistent documentation for peer counselor contacts in a computer data base.
  • Attends and participates in scheduled staff meetings and online breastfeeding conferences/workshops as appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma/GED
  • Must have experience using the Peer Counselor Database system.
  • Must have two (2) years of WIC Peer Counselor experience.
  • Must be a current or former WIC participant who has exclusively breastfed at least one child a minimum of six (6) months.
  • Must be enthusiastic about breastfeeding.
  • Must have a strong desire to help mothers enjoy a positive breastfeeding experience.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • Must have a telephone and be willing to accept phone calls at home.
  • Must be able to assist moms with breastfeeding in assigned WIC Clinics.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.

Current State employees are subject to State Personnel Board rules regarding salary.

CBH accepts educational credential recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and/or the US Department of Education (DOE) will be considered.
