In this position, you’ll play a hands‑on role supporting the safe and reliable operation of hydroelectric generation facilities. Working under the direction of experienced Hydro Operator Mechanics, you’ll learn to operate and monitor hydro stations, dams, and associated mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems. You’ll assist with operating turbines, generators, pumps, gates, valves, and control systems while gaining practical experience in maintenance, troubleshooting, and switching activities.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the operation of attended and unattended hydroelectric generation stations and associated facilities
  • Operate and monitor mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic equipment using computer control systems and manual controls
  • Perform step‑by‑step operating procedures for turbines, generators, pumps, gates, valves, breakers, and transformers
  • Monitor system status through computer displays, instrumentation readings, and routine equipment inspections
  • Identify abnormal operating conditions and assist with corrective actions under supervision
  • Issue, transfer, and release work authorizations, including approvals, permissions, and clearances, as directed
  • Perform preventive, corrective, and emergency maintenance, including cleaning, lubricating, adjusting, and repairing equipment
  • Assist mechanics and technicians with troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair activities
  • Maintain operating logs, reports, records, and maintenance documentation
  • Operate vehicles, cranes, hoists, and other station equipment; perform housekeeping and material handling duties

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Valid California Class C Driver’s License
  • Ability to perform physical work safely, including lifting, climbing ladders or stairways, and working in confined or elevated areas around mechanical equipment, rotating machinery, and high‑voltage electrical systems
  • Basic computer skills and ability to learn computer‑based control systems, communicate clearly, follow instructions, and maintain accurate records
  • Ability to drive and work safely in inclement and winter weather conditions
  • Ability to work a 4x10 Monday–Thursday schedule

Preferred Qualifications

  • Coursework or experience related to mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, or industrial systems
  • Familiarity with power plant or industrial facility operations
  • Knowledge of electrical and mechanical drawings, diagrams, and schematics
  • Understanding of hydroelectric generation systems and equipment
  • Experience using hand tools, rigging equipment, and basic maintenance practices
  • Demonstrated reliability, eagerness to learn, and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment

Additional Information

  • This position’s work mode is on-site. The employee will report to an SCE facility or in the field location. Further details of this work mode will be discussed at the interview stage. The work mode can be changed based on business needs.

  • The primary work location for this position is Big Creek Lower Canyon region with significant travel throughout the regional SCE service territory.
  • This position has been identified as a NERC/CIP impacted position - Prior to being hired, the successful candidate must pass a Personnel Risk Assessment (PRA) or Background Investigation. Once hired, the candidate must complete specified training prior to gaining un-escorted access to assigned work location and performing necessary job duties.
  • Relocation does not apply to this position.
  • This position requires testing and applicants who are identified to continue through the selection process will be invited to test via email. Reference our Information Guides for the following tests: (EEI POSS (Test #5100)). Candidates who have previously passed these assessment(s), in some cases, may not need to retest again for this position.
