Oregon State Hospital, a Joint Commission and CMS certified public psychiatric hospital, provides psychiatric hospital services and patient treatment services to persons committed by the Oregon courts as part of the state mental health system. The Oregon State Hospital Salem Campus is a 610-bed facility supported by approximately 2,000 staff.
This position exists within the Vocational and Educational Services Department which provides a comprehensive range of services to the forensic inpatient and residential populations of Oregon State Hospital. The Education Specialist (Institution Teacher) provides individual academic assessment and individual and group education programs throughout the hospital. The employee in this position provides consultation services and in-service training to the staff.
Assessment Services
- Engage with students to discern prior knowledge, learning needs, and college and career readiness goals.
- Organize and review information on students’ content knowledge, prior learning experiences, and learning needs from school transcripts, questionnaires, and student interviews.
- Use a variety of culturally sensitive and respectful resources to monitor learning and adjust instruction and goals.
Learning Goal Setting
- Facilitate the development of student learning goals that align with the Patient’s Treatment Care Plan and students’ interests.
- Empower students to engage with new ideas and experiences that help refine or change learning goals over time.
- Communicate clear expectations and motivate students to persist in meeting their goals.
Instruction
- Address diverse learning modalities, abilities, needs, and interests through differentiated instruction in small group settings or 1-on-1.
- Engage students actively in their own learning through relevant, thought-provoking questions, problems, and tasks.
- Select and use resources and textbooks aligned with students’ goals and interests, applicable to their lives.
- Provide multiple means and modalities for presenting and engaging students with concepts, ideas, and materials.
- Engage in active listening, dialogue, and questioning to facilitate and support learning.
- Adapt goals to engage students who have difficulty with a particular approach and to deepen understanding.
- Build student confidence by providing feedback on progress and clear steps needed to continue moving toward goal attainment.
- Establish a community of practice among students to encourage peer-to-peer learning and rapport.
- Provide hands-on opportunities for students to interact with computers, the Internet, and other digital media to build technology literacy skills.
- Monitor clients’ use of classroom computers to ensure safe and appropriate use.

Minimum Qualifications
- A master’s degree from an Oregon-approved teacher education program.
- An appropriate Oregon teaching license/certificate by the time of appointment.
Special Qualifications
- Possession of an appropriate Oregon State Teacher’s Certificate at the time of appointment.
- A learning specialty, with experience in adult education and assessment.
