JOB SUMMARY:
As a Lead Payroll Specialist, you will serve as the subject matter expert and primary point of contact for complex payroll processes, ensuring accurate and timely payroll in compliance with all relevant regulations. You will provide guidance to peers, support process improvements, and collaborate cross-functionally to resolve payroll issues and drive operational excellence. In this role, you will oversee all aspects of the payroll cycle—from data entry and verification to tax calculations and reporting. Success in this position requires meticulous attention to detail, strong communication skills, and a deep understanding of payroll procedures and regulatory requirements.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Oversee the payroll process, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations.
- Prepare and submit payroll tax returns, reports, and filings as required.
- Interface with tax and benefits providers to ensure accurate withholding and deductions.
- Prepare and distribute paychecks or direct deposits on time.
- Stay up to date on changes in payroll regulations and tax laws.
- Provide training and guidance to junior staff on payroll processes, procedures, and best practices.
- Identify opportunities for improvement in the payroll process and implement effective solutions.
- Collaborate with HR team and finance departments to reconcile payroll data and address discrepancies.
- Work with HRIS to test software updates, enhancements, and fixes to payroll systems.
- Act as the primary point of contact for escalated payroll related inquiries from employees, managers, and external stakeholders.
- Address payroll issues promptly and professionally, offering accurate information and guidance.
- Provide technical support and troubleshooting for payroll system issues.
- Partner with HRIS to manage the maintenance of payroll systems and software to ensure data integrity and functionality.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience
- 4-6 years of experience in payroll processing.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & COMPETENCIES:
- Proven experience with payroll software systems. Dayforce experience a plus.
- Strong understanding of federal and state payroll tax regulations.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to focus on the task at hand even under pressure, prioritizing effectively
- Ability to remain composed during high pressure situations
- Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Reliable means of transportation are required. This individual will work onsite at a centralized location and require moderate travel to branches for appointments.
- Occasional bending/lifting/pushing/pulling of objects up to 40lbs.
- Frequent sitting and/or walking.
- Requires close visual acuity.
- Frequent use of hands to manipulate/grasp objects and forward reaching.
- Use of computer keyboard, calculator and other office equipment.
