JOB SUMMARY
The Cataloging and Systems Librarian fosters critical thinking and lifelong learning skills by providing access to resources that promote success. Primary responsibilities ensure that both physical and digital library resources are accessible to individuals through the selection and purchase of materials, creation and curation of metadata, and maintenance of library-related systems to ensure optimal functionality.
The Cataloging and Systems Librarian also participates in the development of library policies and procedures, represents the department in both campus committees and inter-departmental meetings, assists individuals at the reference and circulation desk, and ensures smooth day-to-day library operations in the absence of the Library Director.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Library Systems Maintenance (25%)
- Serve as the Alma and Primo Certified Administrator: configuring systems to meet Cleveland State’s needs, implementing Alma extensions, using Ex Libris Developer Network tools and APIs to design and maintain front-end (Primo) customizations, maximizing workflows to increase efficiency, monitoring system performance, and coordinating system upgrades.
- Provide quality control oversight and perform maintenance activities for LibApps and other library software, suggest and coordinate system software and hardware upgrades, and train staff on system updates and upgrades.
- Diagnose and correct issues with database and/or library catalog access, and patch online resources that are inaccessible or malfunctioning.
- Coordinate with the IT department and vendors to create seamless authorizations for on- and off-site access and address larger-scale access issues.
Cataloging (20%)
- Perform original and copy cataloging of library materials in all formats and maintain batch processing of metadata for electronic resources.
- Ensure overall compliance with national and local library standards (MARC, RDA, AACR2, NACO, DCRM, LCSH, and LCC) for cataloging and classification practices, in addition to any other appropriate cataloging or metadata standards for resource description.
- Proofread published catalog records to ensure adherence to standard practices and edit/update existing catalog records to improve access.
Reference Assistance (15%)
- Assist students, faculty, staff, and community patrons in person, by phone, by email, and via LibChat with finding physical and digital items in the online catalog and databases, assessing the academic integrity of sources, and building proper citations in various citation styles.
- Provide course support in library research skills as requested by faculty, including leading class workshops, creating video tutorials, and developing online research guides and handouts.
Collection Development (15%)
- Create policies and procedures governing the print collection.
- Assist in the selection and purchase of books and periodicals.
- Coordinate the deselection and stacks maintenance processes including running usage reports, maintaining records on lost and missing items, soliciting faculty input, and training and supervising student workers.
Circulation Desk Assistance (15%)
- Provide scheduled circulation desk assistance including checking library materials in and out, registering new patrons, collecting fines, renewing and reserving materials, recording usage data, and creating campus ID cards.
Government Documents Management (5%)
- Receive and process government documents according to depository guidelines.
- Maintain accurate records of government document holdings.
- Create research guides and tutorials on accessing government documents and assist patrons seeking government information.
- Adhere to federal depository library regulations and reporting requirements and stay updated on changes to government document policies and procedures.
Non-Essential Functions (5%)
- Serve on various college committees as appropriate.
- Participate in professional development activities.
- Promote new library resources to the campus.
- Assist the Library Director in maintaining accurate collection statistics for reporting purposes.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

WORK ACTIVITIES & EQUIPMENT
Work activities routinely involve the use of personal computers, printers, scanners, and presentation equipment.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS / QUALIFICIATIONS
- Minimum of a Master’s Degree in: Library and Information Science (MLIS), Library and Information Studies (MLIS), Information Science (MSIS), Library Science (MLS) or equivalent from an ALA-accredited program.
- A minimum of three (3) years’ experience is required in one or more of the following areas: cataloging, library systems maintenance, circulation, or reference.
- At least one year of cataloging and/or library systems maintenance experience is preferred.
- Academic library experience is preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of current national cataloging/metadata content and structural standards.
- Knowledge of and experience with a cloud-based library management system; Alma and Primo Administration Certification preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of HTML and CSS preferred.
- Knowledge of standards related to web accessibility and ADA compliance preferred.
JOB LOCATION
The Library, located on the main campus of Cleveland State Community College in Cleveland, Tennessee, is the primary workplace. Occasional travel to off-campus sites within the college’s five (5) county service area may be required.
