JOB SUMMARY

The Loan Fraud Manager will act as the primary resource for all loan fraud matters within the organization. This position requires a highly analytical, detail-oriented professional with extensive experience in loan fraud detection, investigation, and prevention in a financial institution setting. The specialist will work closely with the Fraud Operations team and cross-functional teams including lending, retail, compliance, legal, and risk to identify suspicious activities, lead investigations, recommend policy enhancements, and support regulatory compliance.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Design and lead the loan fraud prevention program, aligning strategies with the organization’s lending practices, risk appetite, and regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate organization-wide loan fraud detection strategies, collaborating with consumer and commercial lending, underwriting, retail, and credit admin teams to enhance fraud mitigation capabilities.
  • Lead the detection, investigation, and resolution of loan fraud cases, including application fraud, identity theft, document forgery, and insider fraud.
  • Review loan applications and documentation to identify inconsistencies, red flags, and potential fraud indicators.
  • Track and analyze loan fraud data to identify emerging trends and patterns; prepare and present reports to senior leadership to inform strategic decision-making.
  • Create and maintain a loan fraud risk assessment process, coordinating with credit administration to evaluate risks across origination, servicing, and collections to identify evolving fraud threats.
  • Conduct interviews, gather evidence, and prepare detailed fraud investigation reports for internal and external stakeholders, including law enforcement and regulatory bodies.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of emerging fraud schemes, industry trends, and regulatory changes impacting loan fraud.
  • Recommend and assist in the implementation of fraud prevention technologies, data analytics tools, and process improvements.
  • Train and advise credit union staff on loan fraud awareness and best practices.
  • Support audits, regulatory examinations, and compliance initiatives related to fraud risk management.
  • Serve as the escalation point for complex or high-risk fraud cases.
  • Maintain confidentiality and integrity in handling sensitive information.
  • Other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & COMPETENCIES

  • Highly proficient in identifying, analyzing and solving complex situations or problems. Ability to act in a decisive and sometimes urgent way to achieve results.

  • Demonstrate strong technical skills, regulatory/compliance knowledge and the ability to apply both independently.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment with sensitive or confidential information.
  • Proficiency in data analysis tools and techniques is a plus.
  • Strong knowledge of Reg. Z, FCRA
  • Work effectively as part of a team with strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills including MS Office suite of programs, databases and operations systems.
  • Ability to manage multiple investigations and priorities simultaneously.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, capable of preparing clear and concise reports.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across departments and provide training or guidance on fraud awareness.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in finance, criminal justice, business administration, or related field preferred, or equivalent experience in lieu of degree.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in fraud investigation or risk management, with a focus on loan fraud in a financial institution (credit union experience highly preferred).
  • Proven track record of independently managing complex fraud investigations.
  • Professional certifications such as CFE (Certified Fraud Examiner) strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of lending processes, credit risk, and underwriting.
