Overview:

The Internal Audit Manager is responsible for managing the planning, execution, and reporting of risk-based internal audits, in accordance with the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) Standards. Reporting directly to the Chief Audit Officer, this role supports the delivery of independent assurance to management and the Supervisory Committee on the effectiveness of the credit union’s governance, risk management, and internal control environment. The Internal Audit Manager will supervise and develop the internal audit team, ensuring the function operates effectively and adds value to the credit union.

Essential Functions:

  • Risk-Based Planning: Assist in the development and implementation of the annual internal audit plan through a risk assessment process that considers the credit union’s strategy, operations, and regulatory environment.
  • Audit Execution: Oversee performance of internal audits to evaluate the design and effectiveness of internal controls, risk management, and governance processes. Review and approve audit workpapers, ensuring audits are conducted in accordance with IIA Standards.
  • Reporting: Prepare clear, balanced, and actionable audit reports that communicate findings, insights, and recommendations to management and the Supervisory Committee. Present results in a manner that promotes constructive dialogue and improvement.
  • Follow-Up: Monitor and report on management’s progress in addressing audit findings and recommendations, ensuring timely remediation.
  • Team Leadership: Supervise, coach, and develop members of the internal audit team. Oversee recruitment, training, performance management, and foster a culture of continuous improvement and professional development.
  • Policies and Methodology: Support the development and maintenance of internal audit policies, methodology, and quality assurance processes to ensure alignment with IIA Standards.
  • Regulatory & Industry Awareness: Maintain awareness of regulatory, industry, and best practice developments relevant to internal audit and the financial services industry.
  • Advisory Support: Provide advisory support to management on risk, control, and governance matters while maintaining independence and objectivity.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of the IIA International Professional Practices Framework (IPPF) and internal audit standards.
  • Broad understanding of credit union operations, including lending, deposits, investments, IT, and compliance.
  • Familiarity with risks facing financial institutions, including credit, operational, compliance, strategic, and technology risks.
  • Strong understanding of internal controls and how to assess their effectiveness.
  • Excellent analytical skills with the ability to evaluate data, identify trends, and draw meaningful conclusions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including ability to present effectively to executive leadership.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, supervise, and develop a professional team.
  • Ability to exercise professional skepticism, judgment, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a related field
  • 5+ years of experience in auditing, with at least 3 years in a supervisory role
  • Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) or Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation strongly preferred
  • Experience in a credit union, banking, or other financial services environment preferred
