This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate or early-career professional to contribute to the design, development, and testing of innovative mechanical systems and products. A strong proficiency in SolidWorks is highly desired, along with a solid understanding of engineering drawing standards, particularly ASME Y14.1 and ASME Y14.5. A Secret security clearance or the ability to obtain a Secret security clearance is required for this position. GRA is willing to sponsor the security clearance process for qualified candidates. The successful candidate will work under the guidance of experienced engineers and will gain hands-on experience in all phases of the product development lifecycle.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design and Development:
    • Design and develop mechanical components, assemblies, and systems primarily using SolidWorks.
    • Create and maintain detailed 2D drawings and 3D models within SolidWorks, adhering to company standards and ASME Y14.1 drawing sheet size and format standards.
    • Apply ASME Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)principles to ensure proper part functionality and manufacturability.
    • Perform basic engineering calculations (e.g., stress analysis, thermal analysis) to support design decisions, potentially utilizing SolidWorks Simulation tools.
    • Participate in design reviews and contribute to problem-solving efforts, leveraging SolidWorks features and capabilities.
    • Develop and implement design improvements to enhance performance, manufacturability, and cost-effectiveness, utilizing SolidWorks tools for optimization.

  • Prototyping and Testing:
    • Assist in the fabrication and assembly of prototypes.
    • Conduct testing and validation of mechanical designs.
    • Collect and analyze test data and prepare reports summarizing results.
    • Identify and troubleshoot design flaws and propose solutions.

  • Documentation and Communication:
    • Maintain accurate and organized design documentation, including drawings, models, and calculations within the SolidWorks environment.
    • Prepare technical reports, presentations, and other documentation to communicate design concepts and progress.
    • Collaborate effectively with other engineers, designers, and manufacturing personnel.
    • Communicate effectively with suppliers and vendors regarding component specifications and requirements, ensuring clear communication of GD&T requirements as defined by ASME Y14.5.

  • Continuous Improvement:
    • Stay up-to-date on the latest mechanical engineering technologies and design methodologies, with a focus on advancements in SolidWorks.
    • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance design processes and product quality.
    • Adhere to company standards and procedures for design, documentation, and quality control.

Experience/Skills/Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field.

  • Familiarity with ASME Y14.1 and ASME Y14.5 standards for engineering drawings.
  • Familiarity with manufacturing processes, such as machining, casting, and injection molding.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to learn quickly and adapt to new technologies and challenges.
  • Must be able to obtain a US Government security clearance.

Preferred But Not Required:

  • Experience with SolidWorks Simulation or other FEA software.
  • Proficiency in applying ASME Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Experience with product lifecycle management (PLM) systems.
  • Internship or co-op experience in a mechanical engineering role.
