Job Description

The multimedia designer and editor will be a creative force in the expansion of Harvard Magazine’s digital offerings. The ideal candidate will have strong visual skills, an eye for editorial design, fluency in online formats, and a proficiency with basic online video and audio editing — along with an enthusiasm for experimentation and a curiosity about the stories that emanate from a major university. Working under the direction and guidance of the Creative Director, this person will create compelling and visually appealing content to help Harvard Magazine connect with its alumni readership and the broader online world.

Job-Specific Responsibilities:

  • Conceiving and creating multimedia content for the Harvard Magazine website and social media channels
  • Contributing to online designs
  • Creating and sourcing artwork to accompany online stories, newsletters, and social media
  • Assisting in the conception and development of new online features
  • Developing and tracking key performance indicators (KPIs) for multimedia content, such as engagement rates, video completion rates, and audience growth
  • Assisting in managing the online homepage
  • Working with alumni, students, and faculty to create user-generated content
  • Contributing to print design as needed
  • Contributing writing as needed

Working Conditions:

This is a hybrid job that requires being in the office in Cambridge, Massachusetts at least two days every week, with additional on-site days required as needed for production and coverage.


Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

  • 1-2 years of experience in professional multimedia design
  • Facility with Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, Video editing programs- Premiere Pro InShot, Lightroom, and Canva
  • 1-2 years of photography experience
  • 1-2 years of illustration experience
  • Some experience using web content management systems
  • Outstanding design skills
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite including Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator
  • Proficiency in online video production, such as TikTok and reels
  • Understanding of UX

Additional Qualifications and Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in multimedia/visual communications, graphic design or related field strongly preferred
  • Ability to work in a team
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at once
  • Boundless curiosity and creativity
  • Willingness to learn new systems and apps
  • Proven track record as a self-starter

Work Format Details

This is a position that is based at a Harvard campus location with some remote work options available. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. All remote work must be performed within one of the Harvard Registered Payroll States, which currently includes Massachusetts, Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Virginia, Washington, and California (CA for exempt positions only). Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.

Salary Grade and Ranges
