HUHS
Harvard University Health Services (HUHS) is the on-site multi-specialty medical practice and health administration for the Harvard community. It provides care to students, faculty, staff, eligible post-docs, retirees, and their dependents. HUHS also manages two university-owned health plans, HUGUP (for faculty and staff) and SHIP (for students), and collaborates with other departments to address public health needs.
Job Description
Work interdependently with physicians, other nurse practitioners, nurses, and health assistants supporting the delivery of care including health maintenance and episodic care to the student, staff, faculty, and their dependents.
Job-Specific Responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the Nurse Manager, the Urgent Care Nurse Practitioner at HUHS works collaboratively to provide preventive, episodic, and ongoing health care to the adolescent, adult and older adult University Community. The Nurse Practitioner works interdependently within a multidisciplinary team to provide care within their scope of practice as outlined by applicable state law, licensing, regulations, institutional policies, and practice agreements.
Clinical Knowledge
- Demonstrates knowledge of etiologies, risk factors, pathophysiology, presentation and epidemiology of medical conditions relevant to area of practice.
- Performs history and physical assessments of patients that are accurate, complete, concise, relevant and appropriate for age, gender and clinical problem.
- Orders appropriate diagnostic studies and correctly interpret the results.
- Utilizes critical thinking to synthesize and analyze collected data.
- Develops implements, evaluates and alters the plan of care as needed.
- Manages general medical and surgical conditions based on knowledge of the indications, contraindications, side effects, interactions and adverse reactions of pharmacologic agents and other relevant treatment modalities.
- Counsels and educates patients and families.
- Demonstrates proficiency in procedural skills pertinent to practice area.
- Maintains accurate, complete, concise and timely documentation in the electronic medical record.
Patient Care
- Provides care that is patient and family centered, compassionate, appropriate and effective for the promotion of health, prevention of illness and treatment of disease throughout the lifespan.
- Facilitates consistent, coordinated care and clear communication among all members of the healthcare team.
- Incorporates the patient and family in care planning and treatment across settings.
- Serves as an advocate for patients and families in navigating the health care system.
Practice Based Learning and Clinical Improvement
- Demonstrates insight into own strengths, limitations and knowledge deficits.
- Demonstrates initiative to meet identified learning needs using multiple resources.
- Actively participates in self-evaluation by seeking and utilizing guidance and constructive feedback in a professional manner.

Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
- Master’s degree
- Graduate of accredited nursing program
- Minimum of 2 years’ relevant work experience
Additional Qualifications and Skills:
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, intermediate Excel skills
- Experience with emergency/urgent care and associated procedures, phlebotomy, IV insertion, previous Nurse Practitioner experience
- Previous experience with an electronic medical record
- Ability to organize tasks, problem solve, and respond in times of multiple demands and urgent situations
Certificates and Licenses:
- Licensed in Massachusetts with authorization to practice as a Certified Nurse Practitioner in the state of Massachusetts
- State and federal DEA certificate
Additional Information
Standard Hours/Schedule: 26 hours per week
- Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday plus 1 weekend every 4th weekend (Saturday and Sunday). When working Sunday, the following Monday is off.
