Job Description

Position Purpose:

The incumbent will support the best interests and needs of Veolia by providing professional service to water and wastewater customers. The Operation and Maintenance Tech does so in the water/wastewater treatment plant operation, transmission, distribution and collection system functions. The Operation and Maintenance Tech Water or Wastewater is a multi-tasking employee who assures that production/treatment plants are operating at maximum efficiency, performs field customer service/meter installations/maintenance and installs/maintains all appurtenances associated with both the distribution and collection systems. Employees will be assigned primarily to either water or wastewater but will be required to assist with both operations as needed.

Must have a strong technical knowledge of and hands-on experience working in the operation of water and/or wastewater treatment plant facilities on an assigned shift. Thorough knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of treatment plants: basic knowledge of electrical and electronic systems: knowledge of hydraulic, chemical and mechanical principles pertinent to water treatment plant operations; thorough knowledge of occupational hazards of the work and the necessary safety precautions; ability to operate a computer and other electronic devices relative to the operation of the plants, troubleshooting malfunctions and recording data; ability to detect flaws in the operation of mechanical equipment and to determine proper remedial measures; ability to conduct water quality testing, validations and all other necessary water quality instrumentation use/maintenance; ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions; ability to work in adverse conditions; skill in the proper operation and care of a variety of specialized water equipment/materials/tools.

Primary Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Read, install, replace and test customer meters.
  • Collect water samples in the distribution system
  • Operates, maintains, repairs and inspects treatment systems to provide compliance with all applicable state and federal regulations maintaining optimum plant operations.
  • Recognize and adjust out-of-specification performance; e.g., production/treatment.
  • Adjustments of plant equipment such as pumping systems, chemical feeders, auxiliary equipment and control system storage tanks levels and pump stations indicators.
  • Performs related field and laboratory tests, which are necessary to monitor and control the facilities, and makes necessary adjustments to equipment, processes and chemical feeders, as test results may indicate and as instructed by the Supervisor.
  • Ensures water quality meets minimum regulatory requirements. Calculates chemical feed rates required, calibrates chemical feed equipment and adjusts chemical feed rate to maintain consistent water quality.
  • Notify customers of interruptions in water/wastewater service and clean work areas after assignment completion.
  • Assist crew in the repair of collection and distribution systems: e.g. main breaks, fire hydrants, and leaks
  • Perform equipment maintenance/repair.
  • Investigate and evaluate customer complaints related to their water/wastewater services: e.g. high bills, low or high pressure, discolored or milky water and noise in the lines.
  • Duties will also include system distribution [collection activities to include however not limited to: mark outs, meter reading, customer service field activities, and distribution system maintenance and repairs.
  • Complete all assigned work orders this would include INFOR and any other tool put in place as well as work generated from CCB.
  • Perform general facility and ground maintenance; mowing and snow removal.
  • Maintains good housekeeping procedures at the plant. Performs routine housekeeping chores and special housekeeping as required.
  • Disconnect water service when required; repair outlet and inlet leaks.
  • Prepare daily work activity reports on services performed Monitor vehicle stock and condition
  • Provide proper documents and reports as required.
  • Will be required to perform emergency duties on an as needed basis and perform regularly scheduled standby emergency duties; response time not to exceed 45 minutes.
  • Schedule parts and materials for projects and schedule jobs. Direct helpers, assistants or new hires (crews).
  • Complies with all organization safety and compliance procedures.
  • Participates in continuous improvement programs.
  • Perform other similar or less skilled work as assigned.
  • Assists supervision and employees of a higher classification as assigned.
  • Performs other job-related tasks as required or requested.

Work Environment:
  • This is an essential role and must report to Management during inclement weather.


Qualifications

Education/Experience/Background:
  • High School Diploma/GED is required.
  • 1 year experience operating and maintaining/repairing water/wastewater systems preferred.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
  • Must be able to read and write English and perform basic math problems.
  • Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks efficiently.
  • Ability to interface with SCADA, Computer Maintenance Management Systems and GIS systems.
  • Computer literacy.

Required Certification/Licenses/Training:
  • NJDEP T-l and W-l licenses preferred. Existing employees bidding into positions as well as new hires would be required to obtain and maintain T-l and W-l licenses with 24 months of obtaining job.
  • Passing grade on position specific pre-test.
  • Valid driver's license.

Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to see, speak, and hear.

Pay Range $44.09 to $48.66 per hour.
