Job DescriptionPURPOSE AND SCOPE:
This position is responsible for managing the college's public relations and communications programs, including the creation and distribution of all news releases, as well as media relations efforts. This includes initiating regular contact with members of the media, enhancing and developing new relationships with print and electronic media, and responding to media inquiries. Working with the Dean Enrollment Services, this position organizes internal communications in the forms of print and electronic publication content, as well as other communication avenues. This position is the primary writer and content organizer for these publications, serving as liaison with other college departments and the external public. Dedicated to project development, special event or initiative planning.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Maintain oversight and programming of QLess software for the Maverick Assistance Center
- Prepares news releases for distribution to local media. Interview faculty, staff, students and administrators for inclusion in news releases
- Serves as secondary college contact for media queries; furnishes information about the college, and assists reporters with stories as requested
- Serves as assistant editor of college publications
- Writes copy for a variety of college marketing materials and publications
- Takes appropriate photographs to accompany articles for publications and news releases
- Assists in planning and implementing a college marketing plan for program publicity and promotion
- Develops and executes strategies for the Speaker¿s Bureau/Expert Guide (GuruConnect) to further enhance media coverage
- Maintains records of news coverage and serves as editor for bi-weekly electronic Mavericks in the News newsletter
- Manages Community College Minute radio spot for multi-campus promotion
- Assists in developing and maintaining brand and visual identity on campus
- Assists in advising during holidays and heavy workload periods
- Performs additional job-related duties, within reason and capabilities, as directed
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Competency in desktop publishing and black & white photography is preferred
PHYSICAL ABILITIES:
The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items, such as papers, books, or small parts; or driving an automobile. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.
WORK SCHEDULE AND CONDITIONS:
- Equipment used includes, PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone and other general office equipment
- Interface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the position
- Work is performed in a climate-controlled office with minimal exposure to safety hazards
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, Public Relations, or related field and at least three years related work experience
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience in college or public relations or as a working journalist
Hourly Pay Rate is 27.14
