Description
The Chair of Anesthesiology serves as the senior clinical and administrative leader for Anesthesiology services across AtlantiCare's two hospital campuses and two surgery centers. This role encompasses strategic leadership, operational management and clinical excellence. The Chair provides both administrative direction (30%) and direct clinical care (70%), ensuring safe, high-quality anesthesia and perioperative services across the institution. The Chair is accountable for departmental performance, regulatory readiness, staff oversight, quality improvement, and alignment with institutional goals.

Key Responsibilities
Leadership, Administration & Department Oversight (40%)
Department Leadership & Policy Setting
- Establish, implement, and maintain departmental policies, standards, and procedures.
- Manage the day-to-day operations of the Department of Anesthesiology.
- Lead strategic planning initiatives and ensure alignment with organizational priorities.
- Promote a culture of safety, professionalism, patient-centered care, and continuous improvement.
Regulatory & Accreditation Readiness
- Prepare the department for inspections by licensing and accrediting authorities.
- Ensure compliance with regulatory standards, documentation requirements, and institutional policies.
Process Improvement & Quality Oversight
- Lead departmental process improvement initiatives and quality programs.
- Oversee and maintain accountability for the peer-review process.
- Develop and implement patient care protocols, standing order sets, and evidence-based practices.
- Ensure clinical services remain consistent with available resources and current approved standards of practice.
Staff Management & Department Engagement
- Manage departmental staff including physicians, CRNAs, SRNAs, and administrative personnel.
- Support recruitment, onboarding, professional development, and retention.
- Provide mentorship and performance evaluations.
- Foster a collaborative, respectful environment.
- Participate in institutional, hospital, and departmental committees and projects.
- Support and advance departmental strategies, goals, and initiatives.
Clinical Responsibilities (60%)
Clinical Practice Excellence
- Provide all required clinical anesthesia services across AtlantiCare locations.
- Maintain knowledge and clinical practice consistent with ASA standards and guidelines.
- Demonstrate sound clinical judgment and responsive decision-making.
- Provide appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic care.
- Maintain technical proficiency in regional anesthesia, airway management, patient monitoring, vascular access, and other core anesthesia skills.
Professional Conduct & Reliability
- Arrive on-time, prepared, and focused for clinical assignments.
- Remain composed and effective during stressful or emergent situations.
- Remain available and responsive to assist colleagues, CRNAs, SRNAs, and staff as needed.

Patient Care & Safety
- Promote patient safety as the foremost priority in all aspects of clinical practice.
- Conduct effective and compassionate pre-operative and post-operative evaluations.
- Administer or supervise pre-anesthetic and intra-operative care plans.
- Provide appropriate medical direction to CRNAs and SRNAs.
- Treat patients, families, and visitors with dignity, respect, and compassion.
Documentation & Compliance
- Complete clinical documentation in a timely, accurate, and compliant manner.
- Maintain all required certifications including current BLS, ACLS, and TB clearance
Education & Mentorship
- Participate in the education and training of departmental staff, hospital staff, SRNAs, and other learners.
- Provide constructive, professional feedback and accept critique when appropriate.
Professionalism & Team Engagement
- Demonstrate positive interpersonal relationships and teamwork with ARMC and department staff.

Qualifications
- MD or DO with Board Certification in Anesthesiology.
- Eligible for medical licensure in the applicable state.
- Demonstrated experience in clinical, academic, and/or administrative leadership.
- Strong knowledge of anesthesia practice, patient safety, and perioperative care standards.
- Excellent communication, professionalism, and team leadership skills.
- Commitment to high-quality patient care and adherence to ASA practice standards.
