A reduced summer schedule is anticipated.Shift: Monday- Friday and will be scheduled between 10:00am-8:00pm. Occasional evenings or weekends may be required: 20-28 hours/weekRegular Days Off: Saturday and Sunday and other weekdays not scheduledSupervision Received: Reports to the Academic Support Coordinator of the Course Achievement and Tutoring CenterSupervision Exercised: NoneSalary: $25.00 Per hour (Part-time non benefited)General Statement of Duties:The primary responsibilities of a professional tutor is to support students (tutees) to become more independent learners, persist in college, and reach their goals. Professional Tutors provide individual and/or group tutoring to students across a broad range of courses based on their personal area of expertise. Professional Tutors meet with students to clarify and review concepts taught in class, explain processes and help students solve specific problems. Tutoring supports classroom-centered activities, and as such, the emphasis and content of the tutoring sessions is determined by the student's needs. Professional Tutors work with colleagues and the Academic Support Coordinator to support their own professional development.Subject Expertise (One) RequiredBiologyChemistryPsychologyEconomics, Marketing, and ManagementDuties and Responsibilities:Duties include but not limited to:Essential:• Provide subject-specific content to help students through drop-in and scheduled assistance• Recognize and utilize different learning styles and student preferences• Create a professional and welcoming environment by modeling respect for students' diverse cultures, language skills, and experiences• Utilize feedback and reflection to improve practice• Recognize primary role to help students become more confident, more successful, self-directed learners• Maintain accurate records of tutoring sessions via Tutor and Tutee Report Sheets.• Make appropriate referrals to other campus and community resources as needed such as the Reading and Writing Center or the Math Tutoring Center• Reach out to students in danger of failing or making appropriate referralsJob Requirements:Required Qualifications• Bachelor's degree in a relevant field for the subject area being tutored.• At least two (2) years of tutoring or teaching experience in the subject area.• Demonstrated ability to support students from diverse backgrounds, including overcoming barriers to academic success.• Strong interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written).• Ability to document student interactions and maintain organized session records.• Fluent in English (reading, writing, and speaking).Additional Information:Salary:Salaries for current Westfield State University employees and individuals currently working for the state of Massachusetts must be calculated individually in accordance with collective bargaining agreements as well as state policies.
