Become a Protection Engineer 2 at Southern California Edison (SCE) and build a better tomorrow.This position will collaborate with the Engineering department of Southern California Edison’s (SCE) Transmission & Distribution (T&D) Organizational Unit.This person will work with the Senior Engineer in the Centralized Area of Protection Engineering to support, implement, evolve and innovate SCE’s Centralized Remedial Action Schemes and Remedial Action Schemes (CRAS/RAS).As a Protection Engineer 2, your work will help power our planet, reduce carbon emissions and create cleaner air for everyone.Are you ready to take on the challenge to help us build the future?

A day in the life - Get ready to think big, work smart and shine bright!

  • Conduct engineering studies to determine protection requirements for RAS/CRAS facilities.
  • Design RAS/CRAS protective relaying systems to ensure the safety and reliability of the SCE grid by designing/reviewing relay AC/DC Schematics, Logic drawings and developing applicable relay settings and RTU point list.
  • Prepare RAS/CRAS documentation and present to WECC Remedial Action Scheme Reliability Subcommittee (RASRS) for approval.
  • Develop RAS/CRAS commissioning test procedures.
  • Provide support to the Grid Control Center (GCC) on daily system operations by monitoring and analyzing the performance of the CRAS/RAS protective relaying systems installed as well as providing valuable analysis to GCC and Substation Construction & Maintenance (SC&M) to facilitate problem resolutions.
  • Support capital program type projects (DSP, TSP, SUB IR, DSERP, etc.) and major capital projects that involve equipment associated to RAS/CRAS.

The essentials

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.
  • Two or more years of electric utility industry engineering experience in Transmission and Distribution.

The preferred

  • Familiarity with transmission system operation (line-and-bus arrangements, reclosing practices, etc).
  • Familiarity with System One-Line Diagram and relay AC and DC Schematics as well as AC and DC wiring standards.
  • Familiarity with digital logic design principles (logic gates, latches, etc.) and experience in developing logic diagrams by using AutoCAD software.
  • Proven ability with Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Visio, and Project).
  • Experience in developing relay settings and familiarity with relay setting software (GE EnerVista UR Setup, SEL AcSELerator).
  • Knowledge of Telecommunications (system redundency, fiber, microwave, Ethernet, TDM, MPLS etc.).
  • Familiarity with use of IEC 61850 GOOSE communications.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. 

You should know …

  • This position’s work mode is hybrid.  The employee will report to an SCE facility for a set number of days with the option to work remotely on the remaining days.  Unless otherwise noted, employees are required to reside in the state of California.  Further details of this work mode will be discussed at the interview stage.

  • Position will require up to 10% travel for local visits between SCE facilities & substations.

  • This position has been identified as a NERC/CIP impacted position - Prior to being hired, the successful candidate must pass a Personnel Risk Assessment (PRA) or Background Investigation.Once hired, the candidate must complete specified training prior to gaining un-escorted access to assigned work location and performing necessary job duties.
