Position Summary:
The Fabrication and Paint Quality Engineer is responsible for ensuring the quality and integrity of fabricated components and painted assemblies used in heavy equipment manufacturing. This role focuses on welding, cutting, forming, machining, and painting processes, ensuring compliance with internal standards, industry codes, and customer requirements. The engineer will work closely with production, design, and supplier teams to identify and resolve quality issues and drive continuous improvement in both fabrication and paint operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Monitor and improve quality performance across fabrication processes including welding, laser cutting, forming, and machining.
- Develop and implement inspection plans, weld quality standards, and process control documentation.
- Conduct root cause analysis and lead corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) for fabrication-related defects.
- Support weld procedure qualification (WPS/PQR) and welder certifications in accordance with AWS or ISO standards.
- Collaborate with design engineering to ensure manufacturability and quality in fabricated components.
- Perform internal audits and support external audits related to fabrication quality.
- Analyze non-conformance data and implement process improvements to reduce scrap and rework.
- Train fabrication personnel on quality standards, inspection techniques, and continuous improvement practices.
- Maintain documentation and records in accordance with ISO 9001 and JCB quality management systems.
- Monitor and improve paint quality performance including surface preparation, primer and topcoat application, and curing processes.
- Develop paint inspection criteria and ensure compliance with visual standards, thickness requirements, and adhesion tests.
- Lead investigations into paint defects such as blistering, peeling, or poor coverage, and drive corrective actions.
- Collaborate with suppliers and internal teams to ensure paint materials and processes meet specifications.
- Support paint line audits and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance finish quality and durability.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Welding Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or a related field.
- 3+ years of experience in fabrication and/or paint quality engineering in a manufacturing environment.
- Strong understanding of welding processes (MIG, TIG, robotic), metal forming, machining, and industrial painting.
- Experience with quality tools such as 8D, FMEA, SPC, and root cause analysis.
- Proficiency in reading engineering drawings and using precision measurement tools.
