Job Summary
The Interventional Registered Nurse provides comprehensive nursing care to patients undergoing interventional and diagnostic procedures. This includes pre-procedure assessment and education, intra-procedural monitoring, and post-procedure care. The nurse collaborates with physicians and interdisciplinary teams to ensure safe sedation, hemodynamic stability, and procedural efficiency in accordance with hospital policies and best practices.
Essential Functions
- Assesses, plans, implements, and evaluates individualized care plans for patients undergoing interventional procedures.
- Collaborates with the physician to administer and monitor moderate sedation, maintaining patient safety and comfort.
- Monitors and documents patient vitals, hemodynamic data, and reactions throughout the procedure.
- Assists with set-up, circulation, and scrubbing duties for a range of cardiac, vascular, and radiologic procedures, including:
- Left and right heart catheterizations, Percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI), Thrombectomies, aortograms, venograms, fistulograms, Dialysis catheter placements/removals, Interventional radiology (biopsies, nephrostomy tubes, paracentesis, pain management), and Supports patient education pre- and post-procedure, including discharge instructions.
- Ensures emergency equipment is operational and stock levels are adequate prior to procedures.
- Maintains HIPAA compliance and patient confidentiality.
- Provides support in hemostasis and responds to bleeding or access site complications.
- Demonstrates initiative and professionalism in performing duties with minimal supervision.
- Documents nursing care accurately and thoroughly in the electronic medical record (EMR).
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities/Expectations
- Strong understanding of cardiovascular anatomy, procedural sedation, and interventional techniques.
- Ability to monitor patients under sedation and recognize changes in condition.
- Proficiency in sterile technique, patient safety protocols, and critical care response.
- Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving abilities.
- Comfort in high-acuity, fast-paced clinical environments with unpredictable conditions.
Qualifications
Education
- Associate degree in Nursing required.
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing preferred.
Licenses/Certifications
- Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice required.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certifications required.
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) preferred.
Experience
- Minimum of two (2) years of clinical nursing experience required; ICU, ED, or cath lab experience preferred.
