Description
The Polysomnographic Technician performs comprehensive polysomnographic testing, monitoring, and scoring under the supervision of a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) and/or the Clinical Director (MD, PhD, or DO).
The technician collects, analyzes, and integrates patient information to identify and address patient-specific needs, including physical or mental limitations, emotional or physiological status related to testing, and relevant medical and social history. Testing parameters and procedures are determined in accordance with laboratory protocols and in collaboration with the ordering provider or clinical director.
The technician prepares, calibrates, and operates polysomnographic equipment to ensure proper function and signal quality. Electrodes and sensors are applied according to published standards, and physiologic calibrations are performed and adjusted as needed. The technician conducts PAP mask fitting and implements appropriate interventions to ensure patient safety and therapeutic effectiveness, including CPAP, BiPAP, and oxygen administration.
The technician follows established procedural protocols, including "lights out" and "lights on" procedures, to ensure accurate data collection. Completion of polysomnographic data acquisition and scoring is a required responsibility, with ongoing monitoring of study quality and signal integrity.
The Polysomnographic Technician complies with BRPT standards of conduct and all applicable clinical, safety, and documentation requirements.

QUALIFICATION:
EDUCATION:
Successful completion of an accredited educational program leading to an associate degree with an emphasis in polysomnography OR Successful completion of a polysomnography program of no less than one (1) year in duration associated with a state-licensed and/or nationally accredited educational facility, or equivalent experience with documented competency in all areas of polysomnographic technology, including sleep study scoring.
Continuing Education:
Ongoing CME requirements must be maintained in accordance with applicable state licensure requirements.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION:
Must have current American Heart Association BLS certification and must maintain current status throughout employment. Polysomnographic credential certification (RPSGT or equivalent per BRPT eligibility requirements) required upon hire or transfer. New Jersey Board of Polysomnography licensure, required upon hire or transfer..
EXPERIENCE:
Prior polysomnography experience preferred but not required. Demonstrated competency in polysomnographic scoring in accordance with AASM guidelines. Ability to recognize and appropriately respond to abnormal sleep patterns, cardiac rhythms, respiratory events, and patient safety concerns. Proficiency with sleep laboratory equipment and clinical applications preferred at time of hire; required competency must be achieved within 30--60 days of hire through training and orientation.
