Research Scientist
UPCI Basic Research Administration - Pennsylvania-Pittsburgh - (26002221)
Our laboratory is recognized for its expertise in single-cell experimental platforms, particularly in studies of polyploid giant cancer cells (PGCCs), cancer cell migration, and therapeutic resistance. We leverage high-throughput microfluidic systems, robotic liquid handling, advanced imaging, and computational image-processing pipelines to interrogate cellular heterogeneity and metastatic potential at single-cell resolution. We are seeking a highly motivated Research Scientist to support and expand these technically sophisticated platforms and contribute to innovative translational cancer research.
The successful candidate will design and conduct wet-bench experiments involving mammalian cell culture, molecular biology, and quantitative imaging; assist with development and optimization of high-throughput microfluidic and automated screening platforms; analyze and interpret experimental data; and collaborate with multidisciplinary team members in engineering, computational biology, and cancer biology. The individual will also contribute to manuscript preparation, grant development, and mentoring of junior trainees.
Education and Experience Requirements:
Doctoral degree Ph.D. in cancer biology, bioengineering, biomedical engineering, cell biology, or a related field is required, along with at least five years of post-doctoral or post-graduate research experience in a relevant area. Prior experience in mammalian cell culture, microscopy, molecular biology techniques, and quantitative data analysis is preferred. Experience with microfluidics, high-throughput screening, automation, or single-cell analysis is highly desirable. Strong organizational, communication, and collaborative skills are essential
Job Summary
Conducts independent scientific research projects from inception to presentation. Prepares and crafts various documentations of research results into manuscripts, proposals, grant applications, and presentations. Trains undergraduates and research technicians. Manages laboratory policies and coordinates project development in collaboration with other specialists.
Essential Functions
Design, execute, and optimize complex experimental studies involving mammalian cell culture, including cancer cell lines, primary tumor cells, and stromal co-culture systems. Develop and implement high-throughput drug screening and quantitative single-cell assays using microfluidic platforms, robotic liquid handling, and advanced imaging. Perform molecular and biochemical assays, including Western blotting, PCR, qPCR, cloning, sequencing library preparation, and flow cytometry. Analyze and interpret experimental data, contribute to manuscript and grant preparation, and mentor trainees. Maintain accurate records, oversee reagent preparation and equipment maintenance, and ensure compliance with laboratory safety and regulatory standards. Experience with in vivo mouse tumor models and tissue analysis is required.
Physical Effort
Little physical effort required. Duties are primarily sedentary. May be required to move objects up to 25 pounds occasionally.
