Description:
The Risk Mitigation Specialist provides support to the Risk Mitigation team, which includes occupational safety and health, emergency management, insurance and enterprise risk management, and physical security. This position helps reduce organizational risk by assisting with safety audits and incident follow-up, contributing to emergency planning, training, and exercises, supporting claims activities, and coordinating security systems and contractors.
The role requires flexibility, curiosity, and the ability to work collaboratively with staff throughout the organization. The Generalist serves to connect and support all risk mitigation functions and strengthens our resilience by ensuring daily tasks, documentation, and follow-through are consistent, accurate, and timely.
Pay range for this position is $28.85/hr to $36.06/hr. Compensation for the selected candidate will depend on candidate qualifications and experience related to the position requirements.
Essential Functions

• Supports the Risk Mitigation Team by serving as a backup and assisting with a wide range of safety, security, and risk-related tasks.
• Conducts field safety audits, workplace evaluations, facility and security inspections, vulnerability assessments, and documents findings.
• Assists with incident investigations by gathering information, reviewing video and timelines, supporting root-cause analysis, and compiling reports.
• Assists with preparing and delivering safety and security training, and coordinating emergency training, drills, and tabletop exercises, including logistics, rosters, documentation, and follow-up actions.
• Assists in maintaining emergency preparedness materials, including the Emergency Operations Plan, Continuity of Operations elements, and hazard-specific documents.
• Supports emergency or incident response activities through basic documentation, communications, and resource tracking within the ICS structure.
• Helps process and track property, casualty, and self-insured claims and supports related vendor work such as plumbing services or water-damage restoration.
• Assists with certificate-of-insurance collection and contract reviews for insurance compliance.
• Provides daily monitoring and basic troubleshooting of security systems, including cameras, access control, alarms, radios, and visitor management platforms.
• Supports access management, including cardholder changes, badge issuance, account deactivation, access audits, and inventory tracking for keys, KTAGs, Knox Boxes, lockers, and related equipment.
• Assists with security onboarding for new hires and contractor background check processes.
• Maintains confidentiality of sensitive risk, personnel, and security information.

Qualifications:
Required Education & Experience
• Associate’s degree with a focus in safety, security, emergency management, business, or closely related field.
• When assessing equivalency, consideration may be given to professional certifications, documented training, on-the-job learning, and the depth and relevance of practical experience.
Note: Candidates without a degree may still qualify by demonstrating progressively responsible work experience in emergency management, occupational safety, risk mitigation, public safety, utilities, or another closely related field that reflects the knowledge, skills, and abilities typically gained through formal education.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Ability to work collaboratively within a team and communicate effectively, adjusting communication style to different individuals, roles, and situations.
• Willingness to understand others’ information preferences, ask clarifying questions, and adapt between detailed explanations, simple guidance, or clear direction as needed.
• Strong attention to detail with accurate documentation skills and the ability to follow established procedures.
• Professional demeanor with a customer-service orientation and the ability to manage multiple tasks, set priorities, and meet expectations.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
• Ability to handle confidential information appropriately.
• Possess a valid driver’s license and continually meet WaterOne driving standards.
• Ability to successfully complete pre-employment drug screening and background verification with WaterOne standards.
Preferred Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree.
• Experience working in a dynamic and multi-disciplinary environment.
• Utility or construction safety experience.
Physical Requirements

An employee in this position may lift or move up to 5 lbs. constantly, 10 Ibs. frequently, 20 Ibs. occasionally, and 40 Ibs. rarely. Employees in this position may frequently work in outdoor weather conditions. Outside working conditions are dependent on the weather, which involves extreme heat (above 90 degrees) in the summer and cold in the winter (below freezing). Some work may be in non-heated and non-air-conditioned structures. Employees in this position may also perform field assignments in poor weather and driving conditions and deal with other hazards of field work such as working at varying heights up to 15 feet above the floor and tolerate noise levels that are generally minimal but may be excessive for brief periods of time (hearing protection is provided).
This position requires the ability to remain in a stationary, standing and/or sitting position for up to several hours a day. Employees must be able to constantly operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a copy machine, telephone, and computer and be able to move from one location to another. Employees must be able to ascend and descend ladders to work on equipment, including climbing water towers and other structures. In addition, they must be able to stand or work on elevated surfaces. Employees are required to use personal protective equipment and navigate construction sites.

The work environment for this position is a typical office setting. Employees will be expected to work in a professional office environment that includes tasks performed at a desk, using standard office equipment such as computers, phones, printers, and filing systems. The job duties for this position sometimes take place in the field and/or plant environment where exposure to various environmental factors such as chemicals, noise from machinery, and fluctuating temperatures is likely and personal protective equipment may be required. The noise level when working in the field and/or plant environment is usually moderate to maximum.
